EHS Falls In Close Contest, St. A Blanks Opponent

MOUNT ZION -- The Effingham High School girls tennis team traveled to Mount Zion Monday and lost a very tight match, 5-4.

"It came down to the final doubles match to decide," said EHS Coach Erik Williamson. "Singles were split 3-3. The first two doubles went 1-1 and the third doubles team was the deciding match."

In singles, Megan Allen was a winner 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 while Lauryn Douthit claimed a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Skyler Schafer won 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3.

In doubles, the Hearts' Chloe Funneman and Douthit combined to win 8-6.

The Hearts are back in action today in a makeup contest at Charleston.

At Mount Zion

Singles

No. 1 -- Mara Lebo (MZ) defeated Emma Kull (E), 6-0, 6-0

No. 2 -- Paige Willer (MZ) defeated Chloe Funneman (E), 6-0, 6-3

No. 3 --Alena Hinch (MZ) defeated Kyra Bannister (E), 6-2, 6-1

No. 4 -- Megan Allen (E) defeated Caroline Edgecombe (MZ), 5-7, 6-3, 6-3

No. 5 -- Lauryn Douthit (E) defeated Gabrielle Watson (MZ), 6-0, 6-2

No. 6 -- Skyler Schafer (E) defeated Ariel Rhodes (MZ), 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3

Doubles

No. 1 -- Lebo/Edgecombe (MZ) defeated Kull/Allen, 8-5

No. 2 -- Funneman/Douthit (E) defeated Willer/Hinch (MZ), 8-6

No. 3 -- Watson/Rhodes (MZ) defeated Bannister/Schafer (E), 8-5

 

At Greenville

Effingham St. Anthony sailed easily through a meet against Greenville, taking a 9-0 victory.

Claire Wortman, Kelly Rentfrow and Madison McWhorter were all 6-1, 6-1 winners in singles play. Megan Hodge claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory while Claire Wegman won 6-3, 6-1. Maryann Saba downed her opponent 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles play, Rentfrow and Wegman combined to win 6-1, 6-2. McWhorter and Kristine Slaughter lost the opener 6-3 but came back 6-2, 11-9. Wortman and Hodge were easy winners at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.

At Greenville

No. 2 -- Kelly Rentfrow (SA) defeated Madi Funneman (G), 6-1, 6-1

No. 4 -- Mary Claire Wegman (SA) defeated Chloe Schaufelberger (G), 6-3, 6-1

No. 5 -- Maryann Saba (SA) defeated Abby Barber (G), 6-2, 6-3

No. 6 -- Madison McWhorter (SA) defeated Mathea Kurt-Shaw (G), 6-1, 6-1
