Effingham Edges Charleston, 5-4; T-town JV Wins

Effingham High School picked up only three singles wins but came back strong in doubles play to take two out of three to pull out a 5-4 win over Charleston in tennis action Tuesday.
Lauren Hoekstra led the Hearts at the No. 1 singles spot by taking a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Kelsie Abolt. Claudia Vinvela Ayllon picked up the No. 4 win, 6-1, 6-2 over Dakota Hicks. The Hearts then took the third point at No. 6 as Emma Kull won over Kailin Albin, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles play, Hoekstra combined with Vinvela Ayllon to win 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 and Gabby Klein-Bethany Vail picked up a close 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 win at No. 3.
"The girls played great," said Coach Angela Woods. "We had to retire two girls due to illness. Gabby and Bethany stepped up to win a crucial and deciding match."

Teutopolis hosted Fairfield in a junior varsity match and claimed the win 7-2.
"The girls had some close matches but were able to keep things together and come out on top," said Coach Debbie Stephens.
T-town improves to 4-0 and returns to action Thursday at Effingham.
