First Round Opened at Wimbledon

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka were among the first-round winners Tuesday at Wimbledon. The second-seeded Nadal, who holds two titles at this grass-court Grand Slam, had to rally to beat Martin Klizan in four sets. Federer, the fourth seed, opened his bid for an eighth title at the All England Club with a straight-set victory over Paolo Lorenzi.
The fifth-seeded Wawrinka defeated Joao Sousa in three sets to pick up his first win at Wimbledon since 2011.The reigning Australian Open champ was stunned by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the first round of the French Open and suffered opening-round Wimbledon setbacks the previous two years.
On the women's side, top-ranked Serena Williams began a run at a sixth Wimbledon crown by beating Anna Tatishvili in straight sets. Fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova, who was 17 when she defeated Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final, dropped only one game in her first-round match against Samantha Murray. Fourth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and last year's runner-up Sabine Lisicki also advanced.
