WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Calumet softball team kicked off its inaugural season in dramatic fashion, surprising Purdue with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon in the Peregrines' opening scrimmage of the year.
After four scoreless innings, Purdue Calumet broke through in the top of the fifth. Hailey Flexter (Altamont High School graduate) got things going with a lead-off walk, before advancing to second on a passed ball. After Abbi Fahse drew a walk as well, pitcher Alison Kimble helped her own cause with a run-scoring single to hand the Peregrines the 1-0 lead. Purdue Calumet was not done though, as Ana Duda slapped a hit up the middle to score Fahse and hand the team a 2-0 advantage heading into the bottom half inning.
The Boilermakers cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the sixth, but Kimble and Peregrine defense were able to strand runners in scoring position in each of the last two innings to pull out the victory. Kimble went all seven innings for Purdue Calumet, surrendering just five hits while striking out two. Duda and Kimble paced the team with two hits apiece, while Ashley Adams and Alicia Ward each added one.
Purdue Calumet dropped a 4-3 contest in the nightcap to Lakeland, after introducing a new lineup. The Black and Gold will continue their fall season next weekend, when they take on Huntington, IUPUI and Marian in Indianapolis on Saturday.
