EJHS Drops Loss to Newton, Altamont Scores 22 in Win, T-town Falls to Mattoon

Newton edged Effingham 1-0 in girls junior high softball action Tuesday. The lone run came in the third inning.

"We did well on the defensive end of the game," said EJHS Coach Megan Whitacre "But we could not seem to execute at the plate."

Effingham will be back in action Saturday at the Class AA Sullivan Regional against host Sullivan at 11:30 a.m.

At Newton

At Mulberry Grove

Altamont trailed Mulberry Grove 5-2 after two innings and 10-3 after three. But Altamont came roaring back with a 10-run fourth and an eight-run sixth to claim a 22-13 junior high softball victory.

Altamont had a whopping 26 hits in the contest led by Katie Grimsley, Shelbi Stone, Carlyey McHugh and Jade Shryock with two singles, a double and two RBI each, Leah Mayhaus with three singles, a double, triple and five RBI and Tinley Mette with a single, double and two RBI.

Altamont is now 9-10 on the season.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis took a 1-0 first inning lead and the score was tied at 2-2 after two innings. But Mattoon tallied single runs in the third, fourth and fifth and two in the sixth for a 7-2 victory.

T-town had only three hits while Mattoon banged out 10.

T-town drops to 4-12 and will face Shelbyville today in the opening round of the IESA AA Regional.
