Effingham Jr. High Nabs Softball Victory, Roundup

Effingham Junior High School downed Shelbyville 15-9 in girls softball competition Tuesday.

The Mustangs took a 3-1 first inning lead but trailed Shelbyville 8-4 after three innings and 9-6 after five. Effingham then had a three-run sixth and a six-run seventh.

"We were very aggressive at the plate tonight with 14 hits as a team," said EJHS Coach Megan Whitacre. "Armstrong went three for three in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Hirtzel had two key RBI for us in the second and fourth innings. In the top of the seventh, we started our rally with a single by Ramos followed by three more hits and RBI from Fox, Kuhlman and Armstrong."

The Mustangs are now 8-1 on the season.

At Sullivan

Sullivan handed visiting Effingham St. Anthony an 11-4 loss Tuesday. St. Anthony held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth when Sullivan broke the game open with seven runs.

Bassett and Riley led the winners with two singles each. St. Anthony was led by Gibson with a single and double and Kabbes with a single, triple and an RBI.

Teutopolis held leads throughout but Jasper County came back to score seven runs in the bottom of the sixth and pull out a 13-7 victory.

T-town outhit Jasper County by a 7-6 count. Morgan Mette had two singles and an RBI and Marianna Hemmen two singles. Emma Beckman had a triple and two RBI. T-town drops to 3-7.

Jasper County was led by Earnest with a single, double and three RBI.

At Newton

Mulberry Grove stepped out to a 10-1 first inning lead and tallied a 26-11 victory over Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick.

Mulberry Grove had 11 hits while BCCH had eight hits. Claire Gardner and Olivia Witteborg had two singles each while Gardner had two RBI and Witteborg one.

Altamont took an early lead and then held off a challenge by St. Elmo/Brownstown to pick up a 12-7 victory.

Altamont led 10-3 after three innings but St. Elmo/Brownstown came back with two runs in the fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh only to fall short.

Hanna Wolff had two singles, a double and an RBI for the winners while Shelbi Stone had two singles and three RBI and Brooke Stuckemeyer a double and an RBI.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Mackenzie Parkison with three singles, Fatima Viramontes and Audrey Reynolds with two singles each and Katelyn Maxey with a double and an RBI. Reynolds also had an RBI.

Altamont is now 6-6 on the season and 2-0 in the National Trail Conference.
