South Central Third At Jr. High State Softball, Effingham Falls

South Central shows off its fourth place trophy from the Class 1A State Tournament.

South Central claimed fourth place at the Class 1A State Softball Tournament during the weekend.

The Falcons won Friday over Mazon-Verona-Kinsman by an 8-4 count.

The winners trailed M-V-K by a 4-0 tally going into the bottom of the third but pulled within one with a three-run frame. South Central then moved ahead with two runs in the fourth and added on a single run in the fifth and finished with two in the sixth.

The Falcons had eight hits led by Emmie Ruholl with two singles, a double and two RBI, Rylan Williams with two singles and two RBI and Kyndl Bolen with a single and an RBI.

Annie Ruholl threw a seven-hitter with two walks and three strikeouts.

In other opening round games, Cambridge blanked Pleasant Hill 12-0, McNabb Putnam County won over Lexington 10-6 and LeRoy downed Carrollton St. John 9-1.

The Falcons ran into a tough pitcher in their second contest and fell to Cambridge by an 11-0 count in five innings.

Cambridge's C. Casteel threw a one-hitter with one walk and 14 strikeouts.

In the other semifinal, McNabb Putnam County edged LeRoy 6-5.

LeRoy then claimed an 8-3 win and the Falcons finished fourth.

LeRoy stepped out to a 2-0 opening inning lead and led 5-0 after two. South Central scored a single run in the fourth but LeRoy took an 8-1 lead in the sixth. South Central attempted a comeback with two runs in the seventh only to fall short.

Rylan Williams led the way for the Falcons with a single and double while Zoey Kramer had a triple and A. Ruholl a single and an RBI. South Central ended the season with a 21-5 record.

The championship went to Cambridge over McNabb Putnam County 7-2.

Class 3A

Effingham fell against a tough Manteno team by 18-4 in five innings Friday at the Class 3A State Tournament at Champaign Fields in Normal.

Manteno stepped out to a 3-0 opening inning lead, tacked on two in the second and seven in the third.

The Mustangs broke loose with two runs in the bottom of the third and tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth but Manteno scored six more to end the game in the fifth.

Effingham banged out 11 hits led by Mady Hoffman with three singles and an RBI, MacKynzie Hites with two singles and an RBI, April Martin with a double, Cloie Bailey with two singles and an RBI and Elizabeth Kreke with two singles.

The Mustangs finished their outstanding season with an 17-2 record. 

In other first round games, Chatham Glenwood beat Normal Chiddix, 8-5, Edwardsville Liberty trounced Manhattan 24-9 and Stanford Olympic edged Lake Zurich South 15-14.

In the semifinals, Chatham Glenwood beat Edwardsville Liberty 12-5 and Manteno edged Stanford Olympia 6-4.

In th third place game Edwardsville Liberty beat Stanford Olympia 6-3 and the championship went to Manteno over Chatham Glenwood 6-4.
