Five Junior High Softball Teams Advance To Sectionals

Five area junior high school softball teams won regional championships Tuesday and advance to sectional play.

Class 1A Sigel St. Michael Regional

South Central claimed the championship of the St. Michael Regional by beating Neoga by a 5-2 count.

Neoga held a 2-1 lead in the second inning but South Central came back with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth and seventh each.

Both teams had seven hits but Neoga ended up committing four errors.

Annie Ruholl threw a seven-hitter with one walk while striking out five.

Teammate Rylan Williams led the way offensively with two singles, a triple and one RBI while Kyndl Bolen added a single and triple. Alexa Gile and Ophie Lowry had one RBI each.

Neoga was led in hitting by Maddi Frankie with a single and triple, Lillian Denson with a triple, Chloe Frankie with two singles and Keeli McKay with a single and an RBI. EmmaRee McTeer added an RBI.

Maleah Coy suffered the tough-luck loss, throwing a seven-hitter with two walks while striking out 10.

South Central advances to its own sectional Saturday to face Dieterich at 11 a.m. for the right to advance to State. South Central is 20-2 on the season.

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional

There was only one run scored and Dieterich tallied that in the third inning for the victory over Albion in the championship of the  Hutsonville Regional Tuesday.

Dieterich had only two hits compared to five for Albion, but Albion had three errors.

Emery Bill and Kyla Tegeler had a single each for the only hits. Lydia Kreke picked up the win, going all seven innings. She finished allowing five hits, two walks while striking out 11.

Albion's pitcher allowed no walks and struck out 13.

Dieterich advances to the South Central Sectional Saturday to meet the host team at 11 a.m. Dieterich has an 11-8 record.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Cumberland claimed the championship of the Teutopolis Regional.

The winners downed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg by a 10-4 count.

The team had 12 hits led by Kaycie Ralston with three singles, Josie Smith wth a double, triple and four RBI. Lilly McMechan with two singles and two RBI, Brylee Holsapple with a single, double and one RBI and Brittlin Murphy with a double and an RBI.

Kyndall Strohl went the distance on the mound. She gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks.

Cumberland, standing at 12-9 on the season, advances to the Casey-Westfield Sectional Saturday to meet Paris Mayo (14-1) at 11 a.m. for the right to advance to State.

St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed the championship of its own regional.

Class 2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

St. Elmo/Brownstown won its own regional championship by edging Pana by a 5-4 tally Tuesday.

St. Elmo/Brownstown improved to 13-6 on the season and will now meet Staunton (13-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gillespie Sectional. The winner advances to the State Tournament.

 

Effingham Junior High School captured the championship of the Charleston Regional.

Class 3A Charleston Regional

Effingham banged out 17 hits and tallied a 7-3 win over Jasper County to claim the Charleston Regional championship Tuesday.

The Mustangs trailed Jasper County 2-1 after the first inning. EJHS tied in the third then moved ahead 3-2 in the fifth and finished strong with four runs in the sixth.

Liv Koester had two singles and a triple for the Mustangs while Mady Hoffman had three singles and an RBI and Cloie Bailey three singles. Elizabeth Kreke added a single, double and three RBI, Mackynzie Hites a single, double and an RBI and Miley Wilson a double and an RBI. Kendyl Smith added two singles.

Bailey went five innings on the mound for the win. She gave up two runs on four hits, no walks while striking out 12. Kreke came on to throw the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit, one walk and striking out four.

The Mustangs (14-1) advance to the Champaign Edison Sectional Saturday and face Mahomet-Seymour (7-6) at 11 a.m. for the championship and the right to advance to the State Tournament.
