Effingham Junior High School came through with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-3 softball victory over Mattoon Tuesday.

The Mustangs edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead but Mattoon tied in the top of the second. Effingham moved into a 2-1 lead in the third but, once again, the Wildcats pushed across two runs to move into a 3-2 lead. That's where the scoring stood until the bottom of the seventh.

Effingham had a 10-8 hit count over Mattoon. Mady Hoffman led the way in hitting with three singles and an RBI while Liv Koester had three singles. Elizabeth Kreke added two singles and two RBI.

Along with her two singles and two RBI, Kreke was the pitching winner. She went all seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, two walks while striking out two.

At Dieterich

Jasper County broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run fifth and went on to down Dieterich 8-5 Tuesday.

Dieterich came back to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth before Jasper County won with three in the seventh.

Jasper County finished with 10 hits and was aided by four Dieterich errors.

Jossie Stanley led in hitting for the winners with two triples and an RBI. Katie Jansen added two singles and two RBI while Layla Thomann had two singles. Hailey Mulvey, Mabry Wolf and Kraegen Groves all had a single and an RBI each.

Mulvey was the winning pitcher. She went all seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. She didn't give up a walk and struck out six.

Dieterich was led by Kensi Stortzum and Claire Faller with three singles each. Stortzum added two RBI. Ava Benefiel finished with a single and an RBI while Avery White had an RBI.

At Toledo

Cumberland held a 7-2 lead over Altamont in the fourth. But Altamont came back with two in the fifth and two in the seventh only to fall short by a 7-6 tally Tuesday.

Cumberland's Brittlin Murphy went all seven innings on the mound, allowing six runs on eight hits, two walks while striking out 16.

Kyndall Strohl had a triple and drove in three runs for the winners while Murphy had a double and an RBI. Brylee Holsapple had a single and an RBI.

Altamont outhit Cumberland by two. Olivia Bowman led the way with two singles and two RBI while Teegan Burrus had two singles. Blaire Suckow finished with a single and two RBI while Alyssa Ruholl and Adelita Ruffner added a single and an RBI each.

At Toledo

Neoga's pitching held Sigel St. Michael down as the homestanders claimed an 8-2 victory Tuesday.

Lillian Denson went four innings, allowing no hits, six walks while striking out seven. Maleah Coy then came into the game in the fifth and held the Sharpshooters to only one hit with three walks and also striking out seven over her three innings.

Meanwhile, Neoga had seven hits led by Reyna Coy with two doubles and an RBI, M. Coy with a single, double and an RBI, Denson with two singles and three RBI and Lola Hartke with a double.

Effingham St. Anthony fell to Shelbyville by a 16-7 tally Tuesday.

The Bullpups held a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Shelbyville moved ahead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Shelbyville led 6-4 after two innings and 9-7 after four then had a four-run fifth and a three-run sixth.

St. Anthony outhit Shelbyville by a slight 7-6 tally. Mallory Litz led the Bullpups with two singles, a triple and an RBI while Peyton Clark added two singles and three RBI. Paylin Wilhour finished with a single and an RBI.

At Shelbyville

North Clay/Clay City dropped to 1-5 on the season and will be back in action today at South Central at 4:30 p.m.
