Charleston came calling at Effingham St. Anthony in junior high softball competition  Friday and handed the Bullpups a 19-4 loss in five innings.

Charleston edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead. Charleston moved ahead 4-0 in the top of the second but St. Anthony came back to knot the score in the bottom of the frame.

Charleston then broke the game open with an eight-run third and finished it early with a seven-run fourth.

The winners had nine hits and were aided by seven St. Anthony errors and nine walks.

Ava Hendrickson led the way for the Bullpups with a home run and two RBI. Sylvia Semple added a double and two RBI.

At Cowden

Dieterich ran out to a 10-0 opening inning lead and ended this game over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City by a 16-0 count in three innings Friday.

Dieterich had eight hits led by Lydia Kreke with two singles, a double and fIve RBI, Avery White with a single, double and an RBI and Layla Flach with a double and two RBI. Ava Benefil added a single and drove in two runs while Lexie Funneman had two RBI. Kensi Stortzum and Emery Bill added an RBI each.

CHBC was led by Harper Lilly and Sophie Zumbahlen with a double each.

Dieterich's Lydia Kreke pitched two innings for the win. She did not give up a run or walk and struck out two. Nora Wente threw the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out one.

At Kinmundy

Neoga scored three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to pull out a 12-8 victory over South Central in Friday action.

Neoga took a 2-1 first inning lead but South Central came back with two in the second and three in the third to lead 6-2. Neoga quickly tied with four runs in the top of the fourth and moved ahead 7-6 in the fifth. The winners then tacked on three in the sixth and two in the seventh for the winning margin.

Neoga had 11 hits in the contest led by Skylar Webster and Annie Ruholl with a single, double and two RBI each. Kyndl Bolen and Rylan Williams had a single and an RBI each.

Lillian Denson came on in relief in the third inning for the win on the mound. She gave up two runs on five hits, one walk and struck out four.

South Central was led in the hitting department by Skylar Webster and Annie Ruholl  with a single, double and two RBI each. Kyndl Bolen and Rylan Williams added a single and an RBI each.

At Marshall

Brittlin Murphy drove in four runs on two hits to lead Cumberland past Marshall, 15-1 Friday in five innings.

Murphy doubled in the first inning, scoring two runs and tripled in the third inning, also scoring two.

Cumberland held a 4-0 opening inning lead and led 11-1 in the third. Cumberland finished out with four in the fourth.

The winners had 11 hits led by Murphy, Kyndall Strohl with a single double and an RBI, Josie Smith with two singles and an RBI, Katie McElravy with a single and two RBI and Maci Miller with two RBI.

Lilly McMechan threw four innings, allowing one run on one hit, walked three and struck out eight for the win.

Saturday Games

The Altamont Opening Day Tournament was held with Altamont, St. Anthony, Jasper County and Sullivan competing.

St. Anthony edged Altamont 4-3 in the opening contest. Altamont held a 2-0 first inning lead and led 3-0 after two. But the Bullpups came back with single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings for the victory.

Paylin Wilhour led St. Anthony with two singles and two RBI while Mallory Litz had two singles and an RBI.

Khushi Patel went the distance on the mound, throwing a one-hitter with five walks while striking out seven.

Jasper County then blanked Sullivan by a 6-0 count in the second contest.

In the third place game, Sullivan edged Altamont, 5-4. The two teams were tied at 1-1 in the first before Altamont moved ahead 3-2 in the third. Sullivan tied in the fourth and took a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Altamont came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth only to fall short.

Altamont had five hits led by Alyssa Ruholl and Payton Ort with two singles each and Kara Bauer with a single and an RBI. 

Blaire Suckow suffered the tough-luck loss. She went all five innings, allowing only one hit, giving up four walks while striking out eight.

In the championship contest, Jasper County claimed a 13-6 victory over St. Anthony.

The two teams were tied at 2-2 after two innings. Jasper County then tallied five in the third, four in the fourth and two in the fifth for the victory.

Kraegan Groves had a single, double and two RBI while Hailey Mulvey had a double. Amelia Kennedy had a single and an RBI.

St. Anthony was led by Litz with two singles, a double and an RBI and Morgan Lustig with a single and an RBI.

At Cowden

St. Elmo/Brownstown claimed two victories and suffered one loss at the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Tournament Saturday.

Members of the field included St. Elmo/Brownstown, Mulberry Grove, Robinson and host CHBC.

The team lost to Robinson by an 8-0 count. They came back with a 12-0 victory over Mulberry Grove and then downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 15-0.

There were no others scores reported.

 

At Neoga

Neoga and St. John's Lutheran had nine hits each but St. John's put together 19 runs for a 19-6 victory Saturday.

St. John's took a 6-3 opening inning lead and never looked back.

Neoga was led in hitting by Lillian Denson with two singles and a triple, Keeli McKay with two singles and two RBI, Maddi Frankie with two singles and an RBI and Maleah Coy with a single and two RBI.

The Teutopolis Round Robin had teams from Dieterich and Lawrenceville competing.

In the opener, Teutopolis edged Dieterich by a 6-5 count. The Wooden Shoes scored single runs in the first three innings and in the fifth and two in the sixth to claim the victory.

Dieterich had four hits led by Emery Bill with two singles and an RBI and Emma Williams with a single and an RBI.

The Shoes had nine hits.

There was no report on the Teutopolis vs. Lawrenceville Parkview contest.

In the third game, Lawrenceville Parkview edged Dieterich 8-7. Dieterich held a 7-6 lead going into the fourth and Parkview claimed the win.

Dieterich had 10 hits led by Claire Faller with two singles, a double and five RBI, Kensi Stortzum with a single and double, Lydia Kreke with two singles and an RBI and Lexie Funneman with two singles.

South Central swept a doubleheader over Casey-Westfield Edison Saturday.

South Central was an 11-1 winner in five innings.

The winners had 10 hits in the contest led by Emmie Ruholl with a double, triple and two RBI, Kyndl Bolen with a single, double and an RBI, Rylan Williams with a single and triple, Annie Ruholl with two singles and two RBI and Ophie Lowry with a single and two RBI.

A. Ruholl went the five innings on the mound, allowing one run on three hits, three walks and striking out four.

In the second game, South Central was a 10-1 winner in five innings.

South Central held a 2-0 opening inning lead and led 8-1 after two. South Central tacked on two in the fourth.

The winners had 10 hits led by Bella McDowell with a single, double, triple and three RBI., Williams and Alexa Gile with a single and two RBI each and A. Ruholl with a single and an RBI.

Williams was the winning pitcher. She went four innings allowing, one run on four hits, six walks while striking out nine.
