St. A, WSS, Newton Win Softball Sectionals, Fall In Super-sectionals

St. Anthony won the Class 2A Monticello Sectional championship.
Effingham St. Anthony, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and Newton all claimed sectional softball championships during the weekend but fell Monday in super-sectional title games to see their seasons come to a close.
In an exciting Class 2A Monticello Sectional, St. Anthony tallied a 1-0 victory over Normal University Saturday.
The Bulldogs scored the lone run in the third inning. Stacie Vonderheide reached base on an error and was sacrificed over by Laney Coffin who then reached base on a second error. Julia Schultz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With one out, Addie Wernsing hit a sacrifice fly that scored Vonderheide.
And that was all the scoring for both teams.
The game was a pitcher's duel. Sydney Kibler was the winner for the Bulldogs, giving up only two hits, walking four and striking out five.
Maggie Stadler went the distance for the Pioneers, giving up only two hits, walking four and striking out six in the loss.
The Bulldogs went up and down in the first two innings before Vonderheide scored in the third. St. Anthony again was up and down in the third and sixth innings and did get a runner on base in the fifth when Julia Schultz was hit by a pitch. St. Anthony put two runners on base in the seventh as S. Kibler reached on an error. With two strikeouts, Coffin singled. But both runners were then stranded with a third strikeout.
Normal U put a runner on base in the second on a walk to Jordyn Roop. The Pioneers had two runners in the fourth. Meera Sunderam drew a walk. With two outs, Ryan Coombs singled but the Bulldogs got the final out on a pop-up.
Normal U. rumbled again in the sixth and loaded the bases. Kyndal Shively drew a leadoff walk but was thrown out at third. Maddie Schierholz reached on an error. With two outs, Emma Steward drew a walk but a fly ball was the final out.
The Pioneers put the tying run on base in the seventh on an error. Molly Jones was sacrificed over and reached third base. The Bulldogs got the second out and the third came on a strikout by S. Kibler.
St. Anthony then ran into a buzzsaw against Auburn and fell by a 12-2 count in six innings Monday at the Class 2A Decatur Super-Sectional at Millikin University.
Auburn struck quickly with four runs in the first inning behind two walks and three hits and pushed that to 7-0 in the second behind four hits.
St. Anthony went up and down in order through the first three innings before scoring two runs in the fourth.
With two outs, Abbie Hatton doubled and S. Kibler followed with a home run and the Bulldogs stood within 8-2.
Auburn had tallied two more in the fourth and finished out with three in the sixth to end the contest by the 10-run rule.
St. Anthony finished with six hits led by S.Kibler with a double and a two-run homer, Hailey Niebrugge with a single and double and Hatton with a double.

At Altamont
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Casey-Westfield to win the Class 1A Altamont Sectional championship Friday.
The Hatchets edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead then added on two runs in the third.
But Casey-Westfield came back with four runs to move into a 4-3 lead in the fifth.
Then here came Windsor/Stew-Stras with two runs in the top of the seventh to claim the victory.
The Hatchets had 10 hits in the contest led by Ella Kinkelaar with a single and two doubles, Samantha Hayes and Ellie Wittenberg with two singles and an RBI each. Mya Friese added two RBI and Erin Althoff a single and an RBI.
S. Hayes was a winner on the mound. She gave up four runs on nine hits, one walk while striking out five.
Windsor/Stew-Stras then saw its season come to a close at the Class 1A Johnston City Super-sectional. The Hatchets fell to Campbell Hill Trico, 5-3 in eight innings.
The Hatchets edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead but Trico tied in the top of the third. The Hatchets came back to move ahead in the bottom of the inning, 2-1. Trico then scored two in the sixth.
Once again Windsor/Stew-Stras tied the score, this time at 3-3. The game went into the eighth and Trico scored two runs to pull out the victory.
Windsor/Stew-Stras had only four hits compared to 10 for the winners. Kinkelaar led the way with two singles while M. Friese had a single and two RBI.

At Greenville
Newton High School edged Gillespie 3-2 to win the Class 2A Greenville Sectional Saturday.
The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first inning. Gillespie edged ahead 2-1 in the sixth but Newton tied in the top of the seventh and ended up winning with a run in the top of the eighth.
The Eagles had only three hits. Sally Mahaffey had a single and an RBI while Allie Stanley and Avery Mulvey had a single each.
Amelia Collins went the eight innings on the mound. She gave up two runs on six hits, three walks while striking out one.
Newton then traveled to the Johnston City Super-sectional and fell to Carterville, 8-1 Monday.
Carterville took a 4-0 lead in the second inning and tacked on single runs in the third and sixth. Newton scored its lone run in the sixth. Carterville added on two more in the seventh.
Carterville had 13 hits while Newton finished with four. The Eagles were led by Bailee Frichtl with two singles, Mahaffey with a single and an RBI and Lilly Kessler with a single.
Newton finishes the season with a 28-8 record.
