Effingham Wins Class 3A Softball Regional Championship

Effingham High School won the championship of the Highland Regional.

Effingham High School claimed the championship of the Class 3A Highland Softball Regional Friday.

The Hearts didn't mess around, opening up a 6-0 first inning lead on Salem and finishing with a 9-1 victory.

EHS tacked on single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. The lone run for the Wildcats came in the fourth.

Saige Althoff went six innings on the mound, She picked up the pitching win, throwing a four-hitter with one walk while striking out six. Ina Mapes came in to finish the final inning, giving up one walk and striking out two.

Meanwhile on the offensive side, the Hearts banged out 13 hits in the contest that included three home runs.

Leading the way was Alyssa Martin with a single, double, home run and two RBI. Ryley Engel added a single, home run and two RBI while Natalie Armstrong finished with a solo shot. Mya Harvey contributed a double and drove in two runs. Raegan Boone added two singles and an RBI while Madi Kirk added two singles. Sidney Donaldson contributed a single and an RBI.

Coach Jerry Trigg's squad will now square off against Freeburg at 3 p.m. today in the Waterloo Sectional in a game that can be heard on KJ Country 102.3. The Hearts are 23-10 on the season and finished 8-2 in the Apollo Conference.

Freeburg comes into the meeting with a 30-3 record after beating Jerseyville Jersey 3-0 Monday in a regional semifinal and then blanking Mascoutah 3-0 to win the Bethalto Civic Memorial Regional Friday.
