MONTICELLO -- Upsets can come early and one was in the making Tuesday as Effingham St, Anthony held off St. Joseph-Ogden in an 11-10 victory in the Class 2A Monticello Softball Sectional.

The Bulldogs, who have been sailing along during regular season action, ran into a buzzsaw with the Jayhawks. 

St. Anthony started out with a bang, scoring five runs in the second inning. Stacie Vonderheide got the Bulldogs off in the right direction with a double. Laney Coffin followed with a single and Julia Schultz brought a run home with a single. Addy Wernsing then singled home two runs. With two outs, Abby Hatton singled. On a grounder hit by Sidney Kibler, an error was committed and the fifth run of the game crossed the plate.

St. Joseph-Ogden dented the scoreboard with a run in the third. Timera Blackburn-Kelly drew a walk and proceeded to steal, second, third and home.

The Jayhawks then moved into a 7-5 lead in the fourth inning while holding St. Anthony in check. Grace Osterbur singled and Addy Martinie was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Hayden Dahl singled home a run and two runs came home on a single by Emma McKinney. Blackburn-Kelly smacked out a home run, scoring two runs. Chloe Harper followed with a single and eventually scored the sixth and final run of the inning.

But here came the Bulldogs with the big bats in the fifth. Sidney Kibler led off the frame with a solo homer. With one out, Vonderheide hit the second solo shot and Coffin followed with the third home run of the frame and St. Anthony moved into an 8-7 lead.

That lead went to 10-7 in the sixth. With one out, Hatton led off with a single and S. Kibler followed with a single. Maddie Kibler doubled home both runners.

St. Joseph-Ogden retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 10-10. Ella Ward and Blackburn-Kelly were both hit by pitches but the Bulldogs got Ward out. Harper reached base on a fielder's choice. Addison Frick singled home a run. With two outs, Martinie doubled home two runs. Halle Brazelton singled but the Bulldogs got out of the frame without further damage.

St. Anthony came up in the top of the seventh. Schultz singled but was thrown out. The Bulldogs got two outs before Wernsing hit a solo home run off the scoreboard and the lead went to 11-10.

Wernsing, who came on in the fourth inning to pitch, then put the Jayhawks down in order in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.

St. Joseph-Ogden finished the season with a 30-7 record.

St. Anthony moved into a 25-3 mark and Coach Makayla Taylor earned her 100th coaching victory in a four-year span.

The Bulldogs will meet the winner of today's Marshall vs. Normal University contest. The pair will square off for the sectional championship Friday at 5 p.m. The sectional winner advances to the Decatur Super-Sectional Monday and will take on the winner of the Williamsville Sectional. Auburn Co-op won over Tremont Tuesday by a 10-4 count. Stanford Olympia takes on Quincy Notre Dame today.

Class 1A Altamont Sectional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg continues to roll along.

The Hatchets moved into a 3-0 opening inning lead and went on to blank South Central 10-0 as two National Trail Conference softball teams battled it out in the Class 1A Altamont Sectional Tuesday.

WSS tacked on single runs in the third, fourth and seventh around four runs in the fifth.

The Hatchets had three hits led by Ellie Wittenberg with a double and an RBI, Ella Kinkelaar with three singles and Mya Friese with a single and an RBI.  Kinkelaar scored three runs while Alaira Friese scored two.

Samantha Hayes went seven innings. She struck out 13 while walking only one and giving up three hits.

The Cougars hits were all singles by Kyra Swift, Taegan Webster and Lauren Johnson.

The Hatchets drew four walks and South Central finished with three errors.

Windsor/Stew-Stras advances to the championship game to face Casey-Westfield Friday at 4 p.m. Casey-Westfield blanked Edwards County (Albion), 13-0.

Class 2A Greenville Sectinoal

Newton High School moved on with a victory over Trenton Wesclin in the Greenville Sectional Tuesday, 3-1.

The Eagles trailed Wesclin 1-0 in the top of the second but came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. The Eagles then tacked on a final run in the fifth.

Newton had only four hits led by Lexie Grove with two singles and an RBI. Lilly Kessler added a single and an RBI while Bailee Frichtl had a single. Audrie Reich contribued an RBI.

Amelia Collins went the distance on the mound. She gave up one run on five hits, walked two and struck out three.

Newton will now take on the winner of the Gillespie vs. Breese Mater Dei contest that will be played today at 4:30 p.m. The Eagles advanced to the championship game Saturday at 11 a.m.
