St. A Defeats T-town to Win Softball Regional, WSS, S. Central, Newton Win Championships

Effingham St. Anthony won its own Class 2A softball regional championship.

Effingham St. Anthony took advantage of nine hits and handed Teutopolis a 6-4 loss to win the Class 2A St. Anthony Softball Regional championship Friday in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Bulldogs struck early with a 2-0 first inning lead. Addie Wernsing led off with a double. With one out, the Bulldogs drew back-to-back walks as Abby Hatton and Sidney Kibler loaded the bases. Maddie Kibler then drew a bases loaded walk to score a run. And the second run came when Stacie Vonderheide was hit by a pitch.

The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the third. With two outs, Vonderheide knocked out a home run.

But Teutopolis came back to knot the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth. Chloe Hoene was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Olivia Hemmen got on base, also hit by a pitch. Kylie Borries followed that with a double that scored both runners. CJ Apke made the third player in the inning hit by a pitch. Kayleigh Zerrusen reached base on a fielder's choice. Alyss a Tipton then followed with an RBI single. The Bulldogs finally got out of the frame with a strikeout and a fly ball out in the infield.

St. Anthony broke the tie in the fifth. M. Kibler led off the frame with a single. Vonderheide was hit by a pitch. Julia Schultz followed with an RBI single.

The Bulldogs finished out the scoring with two in the sixth. With one out, Hatton and S. Kibler had back-to-back singles. M. Kibler then had a ground out that scored a run. The second run came on a single by Vonderheide and the Bulldogs held a 5-4 lead.

Addie Wernsing came on in the fourth inning in relief of Sydney Kibler. Wernsing finished allowing one run on three hits, one walk while striking out six for the win on the mound.

St. Anthony finished with nine hits led by Vonderheide with a single, home run and three RBI, Coffin with a single and double, M. Kibler with a single and two RBI, Wernsing with a double and Schultz with a single and an RBI.

T-town had six hits led by Olivia Hemmen with a solo home run, Kylie Borries with a double and two RBI, Olivia Copple with a double, Kayleigh Zerrusen with two singles and Mallory Bloemer with a single and an RBI.

The Wooden Shoes saw their season come to a close with a 17-18 record.

St. Anthony advances to the Monticello Sectional Tuesday and will face St. Joseph-Ogden, a 5-1 winner over Tolono Unity Saturday to win its own regional. The second game Wednesday will feature Marshall against Normal University at 5 p.m. The winners advance to the sectional championship Friday at 5 p.m.

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took charge early and went on to hand Altamont a 12-1 loss to win the Class 1A Hutsonville Regional championship Saturday.

The Hatchets edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. WSS then tallied three more in the third and moved into a 9-1 lead in the fourth. Windsor/Stew-Stras finished strong with three runs in the seventh inning.

Windsor-Stew-Stras was on offensively with 16 hits. Mya Friese led the way with a single, double, triple and four RBI. Ella Kinkelaar finished with four singles and an RBI while Samantha Hayes added two singles and two RBI. Ellie Wittenberg, Erin Althoff and Carey Cameron finished with two singles and an RBI each. Alaira Friese had a single and an RBI.

S. Hayes threw a four-hitter over seven innings. She allowed one run and gave up two walks while striking out eight.

Altamont was led in hitting by Grace Lemke with two singles and Peyton Osteen with a single and an RBI. Lemke suffered the loss on the mound.

Windsor/Stew-Stras (26-7) advances to the Altamont Sectional Wednesday to face Natinoal Trail Conference opponent South Central, a 6-0 winner over Red Hill (Bridgeport), in the championship game of the South Central Regional Friday.

In the opening game Tuesday in the sectional, Casey-Westfield faces Edwards County (Albion) at 4 p.m.

Class 1A South Central Regional

South Central blanked Red Hill (Bridgeport) to win its own softball regional Friday, 6-0.

Taegan Webster threw a no-hitter. She went seven innings, allowing one walk while striking out nine.

The Cougars edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead. They added single runs in the third and sixth and three in the fifth.

Webster also provided the hitting power with two singles, a double, home run and two RBI. Kyra Swift and Kaitlyn Swift had a single and double each. Percilla Reid finished with two singles and a double. Lauren Johnson added two singles and two RBI while Zoey Feldhake had two singles and Abi Shuler a single and two RBI.

The Cougars advance to the Altamont Sectional where they will square off against National Trail Conference opponent Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

In the other contest in the sectional, Casey-Westfield and Edwards County (Albion) meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 4 p.m.

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton High School's Amelia Collins threw a no-hitter over nine innings as the Eagles pulled out a 1-0 victory over Flora to win its own 2A regional championship Friday.

The two teams went scoreless through the first eight innings before the Eagles scored the winning run as Sally Mahaffey hit a triple with no outs and scored on a wild pitch in the ninth.

Colins struck out 10 in the no-hitter and allowed only two walks.

Meanwhile, Newton finished with four hits, three coming off the bat of Sally Mahaffey with three singles. Bailee Fricht had the other hit, also a single.

Flora's H. Kitler went eight innings and threw a four-hitter with only one walk while striking out 11 for the tough-luck loss.

Newton now advances to the Greenville Sectional against Trenton Wesclin at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. In the other contest Wednesday, Gillespie and Breese Mater Dei square off at 4:30 p.m. The winners advance to the sectional championship Saturday at 11 a.m.
