EHS Takes Final City Series Win, Softball Roundup

Effingham High School captured the final City Series contest after Effingham St. Anthony had won with the first two victories.

The Bulldogs held a 3-0 lead after two innings but the Hearts came back with a seven-run third then tallied five in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Effingham finished with 11 hits led by Sidney Donaldson with a double, home run and four RBI, Mya Harvey with a double and an RBI, Saige Althoff with two singles and two RBI, Raegan Boone with two singles and an RBI, Jerzi Bierman with two singles, Madi Kirk with a single and three RBI, Natalie Armstrong with a single and an RBI and Ryley Engel with two RBI.

Althoff went 6.2 innings giving up eight runs on 12 hits, one walk and striking out two for the mound win.

St. Anthony was led by Hailey Niebrugge with a double, home run and four RBI, Laney Coffin with three singles and an RBI, Addie Wernsing and Julia Schultz with two singles each, Abbie Hatton with a single and an RBI and Stacie Vonderheide with an RBI.

At Teutopolis

Newton edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead and went on for a 5-1 victory over Teutopolis in Friday competition.

The Eagles banged out 13 hits in the game led by Allie Stanley with three doubles and two RBI, Allie Hermann, Sally Mahaffey and Avery Mulvey with two singles and an RBI each. Camryn Martin added two singles.

Amelia Collins threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts. She gave up one run and no walks.

Kylie Borries had a double while Olivia Copple and Olivia Hemmen had a single each for the Wooden Shoes.

Teutopolis then headed to the Sullivan Invitational Saturday and won the championship.

The Shoes downed Cumberland, 12-6 in their opening contest. The Pirates held a 2-1 opening inning lead but T-town came back to take control of the game with a seven-run second.

T-town had 12 hits led by Malea Helmink with a double, home run and four RBI, Mallory Bloemer with a double, home run and two RBI and Hemmen with a single, home run and two RBI. Chloe Hoene had two singles and two RBI, Kylie Borries two singles and Summer Wall and Cecilia Apke added a single and an RBI each.

Hemmen was the winning, allowing 11 hits, three walks and striking out three.

The Pirates were led by Libby McGinnis with two singles and four RBI, Jenna Houghham with three singles, Jade Carr with two singles and Avery Donsbach and McKenzie  Claybaugh with a single and an RBI each.

Teutopolis then took on Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond for the championship and claimed a 10-4 victory.

The Shoes trailed ALAH 3-2 before opening the game up with a four-run second and a three-run third.

T-town had 14 hits in this contest. Helmink had two singles, a double and three RBI, Bloemer three singles and three RBI, Wall three singles and two RBI, Olivia Copple two singles, Alyssa Tipton a double and Olivia Wermert an RBI.

Tipton went the distance, allowing four runs on nine hits, four walks and striking out seven for the win on the mound.

At Tolono

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg finished with a victory and a defeat at the Tolono Unity Round Robin Saturday.

The Hatchets claimed a 13-9 win over Pinckneyville. 

 The Panthers held a 6-2 lead after two innings but WSS started to chip away and trailed 8-7 after four innings but broke loose with a 5-1 fifth and finished with a 13-9 victory.

WSS had a whopping 17 hits in the contest led by Ellie Wittenberg with three singles and five RBI, Mya Friese with three singles and four RBI, Katelyn VonBehrens with three singles and an RBI, Samantha Hayes with two singles, a triple and an RBI, Ella Kinkelaar with a double and an RBI and Kendra Hayes with a single and an RBI.

Windsor/Stew-Stras and Tolono Unity went 12 innings before the homestanding squad pulled out a 1-0 victory.

It was a pitcher's dual. S. Hayes went seven innings, giving up three hits, no walks and striking out five. M. Friese came on to finish out the final 4.2 innings, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out three in the tough-luck loss.

Eisenmenger went the entire 12 innings for Tolono Unity, giving up six hits, two walks and striking out seven for the win.

Kinkelaar had a single and double for WSS while Erin Althoff had two singles.

Dieterich played host to St. Elmo/Brownstown and claimed a 14-1 victory in five innings Friday.

The Maroons stepped out to a 4-0 opening inning lead then had a 10-run second. The game ended in the fifth.

Callie Faller threw a four-hitter with four strikeouts and three walks.

Dieterich had nine hits led by Kinli Michl with a double and three RBI, Faller with a double and two RBI, Marli Michl with a double and one RBI, Ella Kreke with a single and two RBI and E. Meinhart, E. Meinhart, Ruby Westendorf and Kinley Will with a single and an RBI each.
