St. Anthony Downs WSS For NTC Softball Tourney Title

Effingham St. Anthony handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg an 8-4 loss in the championship game of the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament in a game heard on 979XFM Friday evening at Evergreen Hollow Park.

The Bulldogs quickly stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead. WSS came back with a run in the top of the second but the Bulldogs scored another three runs in the bottom of the second to lead 6-1.

The Hatchets pulled within 6-3 in the fourth. St. Anthony retaliated with two runs in the sixth to lead 8-3. The Hatchets came back with a run in the seventh but it wasn't enough.

The Bulldogs had 10 hits in the contest led by Abbie Hatton with a single, double and four RBI while Ady Rios had a single, triple and an RBI. Addie Wernsing added two singles. Maddie Kibler chipped in with a single and two RBI.

Sidney Kibler got the win on the mound, going four innings, giving up three runs on three hits, two walks and striking out four. Wernsing came on to finish the final three innings allowing one run on four hits, one walk and striking out one.

Windsor/;Stew-Stras was led by Clarissa Johnson with a double and two RBI, Ella Kinkelaar with a triple and an RBI, Samantha Hayes with a double and an RBI, and Kendra Hayes with two singles.

In the third place contest, Grace Lemke threw a no-hitter as Altamont captured a 1-0 win over South Central.

Lemke went the seven innings allowing no hits with three walks while striking out 17.

Altamont scored its lone run in the second inning. Peyton Osteen  had a single and Avery Fleeharty singled home the lone run.

In the consolation championship, Dieterich was an 11-1 winner over St. Elmo/Brownstown in five innings via the 10-run rule.

The Maroons took a 2-0 first inning lead. St. Elmo/Brownstown pulled within 2-1 in the third. But Dieterich ended the game with nine runs in the fourth.

The Maroons had eight hits led by E. Meinhart with a single, double and two RBI, Ruby Westendorf with a triple and two RBI and Callie Faller with two singles. Lucie Jansen and Sammi Goebel had one RBI each.

Faller went the five inings, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and striking out five.

St. Elmo/Brownstown had three hits, all singles by Dayana Haslett, Kelly Moss and Camilla Haslett.
