Hearts Win Softball Apollo DH Over, Eagles Beat Indians, Pirates Win

Effingham High School played host to Taylorville and claimed an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday.

The Hearts blanked the Tornadoes 9-0 in the opening contest. EHS stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and then tallied two in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Myra Harvey finished with a solo home run. Sidney Donaldson added a double and three RBI while Maci Hayes had a double and an RBI. Jerzi Bierman finished with two singles. Natalie Armstrong and Ryley Engel added a single and an RBI each.

N. Armstrong went the distance on the mound, allowing no runs on two hits, two walks while striking out 10.

In the second game, Effingham downed Taylorville 13-1 in five innings via the 10-run rule. The Hearts held a 5-1 opening inning lead then added on three in the second, one in the third and finished out with four in the fourth.

Once again the Hearts were on offensively with 14 hits. Harvey led the way with two doubles and an RBI and Donaldson a single, triple and two RBI. N. Armstrong added two singles and two RBI, Engel two singles and an RBI and Raegan Boone with two singles. Madi Kirk and Hayes added a single and two RBI each and Alyssa Martin a single and an RBI.

Saige Althoff went four innings for the win on the mound. She allowed one run on two hits, no walks and struck out six. Layla McBride finished the final innings, allowing no hits, no walks and striking out two.

At Newton

Newton High School tallied a run in the fifth and one in the sixth to blank Lawrenceville 2-0 in Wednesday action.

The Eagles had four hits led by Bailee Frichtl with two singles and an RBI and Lilly Kessler with a single and an RBI.

Amelia Colilns went 4.2 innings for the win on the mound. She gave up three hits and struck out five. Avery Mulvey finished out the 2.1 innings with two strikeouts.

At Newton

At Okaw Valley

Cumberland broke a 2-2 tie with a four-run third then added on seven in the sixth and four in the seventh for a 17-4 win over Okaw Valley Thursday.

The Pirates had 14 hits in the contest and were aided by eight Okaw Valley errors.

Jenna Hougham had a single, double and an RBI while Libby McGinnis had a double and an RBI. Jadalyn Sowers had three singles and an RBI, Ashton Tolen, Avery Donsbach and Katie Kingery had two singles each. Tolen had two RBI and Donsbach and Kingery one each.

Aubrey Himes went three innings giving up three hits, two walks and striking out two. Mia Holsapple came on to throw six innings for the win, allowing six hits, a walk and striking out two.
