St. Anthony, Windsor/Stew-Stras To Meet For NTC Softball Tourney Championship

Effingham St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed victories Wednesday in the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament and will meet Friday for the championship.

St. Anthony took the early lead against Altamont and claimed a 6-2 win despite being outhit. The Bulldogs moved into a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Altamont came back with a run in the third but the Bulldogs retaliated with a run in the fourth and led 4-1 after five innings. St. Anthony then tacked on two more runs in the sixth and held off a final inning challenge as the Indians scored a run only to fall short.

The Bulldogs had five hits led by Ady Rios with two singles and two RBI and Abbie Hatton with a single and an RBI.

Sydney Kibler went four innings on the mound for the pitching win. Kibler gave up one run on five hits, three walks and struck out eight. Addie Wernsing came on to finish the final three inniings allowing one run on two hits, one walk and striking out six.

Altamont's Grace Lemke and Laila Hankins knocked out a solo homer each while Claire Boehm added two RBI. Lemke suffered the loss on the mound going all six innings, giving up six runs on five hits, six walks and striking out nine.

Dieterich pummeled North Clay/Clay City to the tune of 18-4 in five innings.

Kinli Michl was the leader offensively for the Maroons with a single, double, home run and three RBI. Lucie Jansen added a single, triple and three RBI while E. Meinhart had two singles and three RBI, Elle Kreke had two singles and two RBI while Callie Faller finished with two singles and an RBI. Allie Uthell added a double.

The score was tied 4-4 in the top of the second but Dieterich came roaring back with seven runs in the second and third innings to end the game in the fifth via the 10-run rule.

The Cardinals finished with six hits, all singles. Faith Jones, Lauryn Snell, Ava Fleener and Briley Mullens had a single and an RBI each.

Kreke captured the pitching victory. She went 3.2 innings in relief and threw a two-hitter with two walks and one strikeout.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg's Samantha Hayes threw a three-hitter as her squad handed South Central an 11-1 loss in six innings via the 10-run rule.

Hayes went the whole six innings, allowing one run on three hits, one walk while striking out four.

Hayes also aided her own cause with a single, double and an RBI. Kendra Hayes finished with two singles and two RBI while Ellie Wittenberg had two singles, Mya Friese a single and two RBI and Alaira Friese and Clarissa Johnson a single and an RBI each. Cameron Carey added an RBI.

South Central was led by Taegan Webster,  Lauren Johnson and Percilla Reid with a single each and Amelia Montes with an RBI.

St. Elmo/Brownstown edged Neoga, 13-11 as the two teams banged out a total of 27 hits.

The score was knotted at 1-1 after the first inning. Neoga moved ahead 2-1 in the second but SEB went on a five-run tear in the third and led 8-3 after four. Neoga came back with a run in the fifth and six in the sixth to lead 10-9 going into the seventh when St. Elmo/Brownstown tied the score then had a three-run eighth to pull out the victory.

Jayna Ireland led the way for the Eagles in hitting with four doubles and three RBI. Macey Sapp added a single, two doubles and two RBI. Dayana Haslett had two singles and an RBI while Daisy Chandler, Taylor Claycomb and Kelly Moss had a single and an RBI each. Dezarae Morlan added an RBI.

Neoga was led by Audrey Kepp with a single, double, triple and three RBI. Kadie Becker had three singles and an RBI. Brooklyn Douglas added two singles and an RBI while Kaitlyn Gollihar finished with two singles. Avery Rider added a single and an RBI and Lillian Whitaker had an RBI.

The finals are scheduled for Friday. Dieterich faces St. Elmo/Brownstown at 4:15 p.m. for the consolation championship. Altamont takes on South Central, also at 4:15 p.m. for third place. St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg then square off at 6 p.m. for the championship.
