HAMMOND, Ind. - Purdue University Calumet softball coach Heather Tarter added the 11th member of her 2013 recruiting class with the recent commitment of Olney Community College transfer Hailey Flexter. She joins a class that is headlined by pitchers Shelbie Jones (Mishawaka/Marian University) and Alison Kimble (Toledo, Ill./Parkland) and outfielder Alicia Ward (Mishawaka/Kankakee CC).
“Hailey has the ability to play multiple positions and brings experience from Olney that will help our team grow,” said Tarter. “She will see some time behind the plate, possibility at the corners and maybe even in the middle infield. Hailey is a true utility player that can excel in multiple positions and will help our team where she is needed the most.”
The 5-foot-4 catcher was a NJCAA Region 24 performer for Olney in 2013, after hitting .335 with 16 doubles, two home runs and 33 RBIs. She helped lead the Knights to a third-place finish in the Region 24 tournament, while garnering all-tournament team accolades.
Flexter, now living in Mattoon, starred at Altamont High School, where she was a two-time All-National Trail Conference selection. Flexter played club ball with Mattoon Pride alongside fellow Peregrine commit Alison Kimble. She is the daughter of George and Kim Flexter and plans to major in human resources.
Purdue Calumet will open up its inaugural season in 2013-14, competing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
