Newton Wins Vandalia S.B. Tourney, S.C. Splits At Carlyle/Odin Tourney

VANDALIA -- Newton High School claimed all three games it played to win the championship of the Vandalia Softball Tournament Saturday.

Newton defeated Mount Vernon in its opening contest, 5-1. The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first inning and went scoreless through the next four innings. Newton then tallied four runs in the sixth for the win.

Bailee Frichtl had a single and double for the Eagles while Lexie Grove had three singles, Avery Mulvey a double and three RBI and Camryn  Martin a single and an RBI.

Amelia Colilns was the winner on the mound, going seven innings, allowing one run on six hits, one walk while striking out four.

Newton then faced Vandalia and claimed a 12-2 win in five innings via the 10-run rule.

The Eagles finished with a whopping 14 hits led by Audrie Reich with two singles, a double and three RBI, Frichtl with a single, triple and three RBI, Mackenzie Holder with a single, double and an RBI, Hydi Bierman a double and an RBI and Amelia Collins with two singles and two RBI. Macy Barthelemy added two singles.

Newton finished out with a 3-0 record by blanking Teutopolis, 7-0. The Eagles tallied single runs in the first, second and third innings then having two-run innings in the fourth and sixth.

Avery Mulvey threw a two-hitter with one walk and nine strikeouts.

Sally Mahaffey led offensively for the Eagles with a single, home run and two RBI while C. Martin had two singles and two RBI, Reich a triple and an RBI and Grove a double and an RBI. Frichtl added two singlesnd an RBI.

The Wooden Shoes finished second with a 2-1 record. They fell to Newton then won over Mount Vernon, 5-3 and Vandalia 16-1.

In the Mount Vernon victory, T-town edged out to a 2-1 opening inning lead but the Rams tied in the top of the third and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. The Shoes came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning and held off Mount Vernon in the sixth for the 5-3 victory.

Both teams had five hits but Mount Vernon finished with five errors.

Malea Helmink and Olivia Copple had a triple each for the Shoes while Cecilia Apke had a single and two RBI. Chloe Hoene added a single and an RBI.

Tipton threw a five-hitter with three walks and eight strikeouts.

The Wooden Shoes trounced host Vandalia by a 16-1 tally.

T-town held a 5-0 opening inning lead then had a seven-run second and a four-run third to end the game.

The Wooden Shoes had nine hits led by Wermert with a triple and two RBI, Kayleigh Zerrusen with two singles and two RBI and Helmink with a double and an RBI.

Helmink threw a two-hitter with two walks and six strikeouts.

Third went to Mount Vernon with a 1-2 record and Vandalia was last at 0-4.

At Carlyle

South Central picked up one victory and suffered a lost at the Carlyle/Odin Round Robin Tournament Saturday.

Carlyle blanked South Central, 4-0. Carlyle tallied a run in the second and three in the sixth.

South Central had four hits in the game led by Zoey Feldhake with a single and double.

Taegan Webster picked up the pitching loss, despite striking out 10. She allowed three hits and gave up 10 walks.

South Central then trounced Odin/Patoka/Sandoval, 18-4 in five innings. The Cougars held a 4-3 opening inning lead then scored through the next four innings to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Lauren Johnson led the way in hitting with two singles, a double and four RBI while Webster added a single, double and three RBI. Kaitlyn Swift had four singles while Kyra Swift had three singles and an RBI. Bri Buchanan had a double and four RBI. Abi Shuler and Zoey Feldhake added two singles and an RBI each and Kinlee Thompson a single and two RBI.
