Effingham Wins One, Loses Apollo Conference DH In Softball

The Hearts opened weekend play Friday with a 17-3 victory over Cumberlnd in six innings.

EHS ran out to a 6-0 opening inning lead and never looked back. The Hearts finished with 13 hits in the contest.

Natalie Armstrong had a home run and two RBI while Bria Beals had a double and an RBI. Alyssa Martin finished with three singles and two RBI. Jerzi Bierman chipped in with two singles and two RBI and Raegan Boone had two singles. Sidney Donaldson, Mya Harvey and Saige Althoff added a single and an RBI each.

N. Armstrong went the five innings on the mound, allowing three runs on three hits, no walks and striking out four.

Effingham then fell to Mount Zion in an Apollo Conference doubleheader Saturday.

The Braves took a 10-9 edge in the opeing contest. Mount Zion moved into a 5-2 opening inning lead and added on three in the second. The Hearts came back with a run in the third and moved into an 8-8 tie with a a five-run fourth. EHS then took a 9-8 lead in the top of the sixth but Mount Zion tallied two in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead and that's where it ended.

Bierman had a home run and four RBI for EHS while Donaldson had a single, two doubles and two RBI. Armstrong and Martin had a double each. Boone had two singles.

In the second contest, Mount Zion edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead and went on for a 10-7 victory. The Hearts made a comeback attempt in the seventh only to fall short.

The Hearts outhit Mount Zion by an 11-9 count. Bierman had a single, double, home run and two RBI while N. Armstrong hit two solo home runs. Madi Kirk had two singles and two RBI and Harvey two singles. Althoff added a dobule and Boone had a single and an RBi.
