EHS Falls To Mount Vernon, 7-5

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham High School held a short lead before dropping a 7-5 non-conference softball decision to Mount Vernon Tuesday.
The Hearts took a 1-0 lead in the second and pushed that to 3-0 in the top of the third. The Rams came back with a run in the bottom of the third, then tallied three runs in each of the next two innings. The Hearts mounted a comeback bid with two in the sixth but fell short.
EHS' Kelli Utz had a single and triple while Brandy Pontious had two singles and drove in a run and Deedra Myers led the way with a single, double and two RBI.
The Hearts are now 16-14 on the season and return to action Friday with a doubleheader at Taylorville.
