EHS Softball Season Ends With Loss In Regional, Newton Game Postponed

MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham High School saw its season come to a close with a 9-6 loss against host Mount Vernon Wednesday.
The Rams unleashed their bats, banging out 14 hits in the contest and overcame seven errors.
Mount Vernon edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead and led 3-1 in the second. The Hearts came back with a run in the third but Mount Vernon owned the contest with a run in the fourth and five more in the fifth.
The Hearts attempted a comeback twice with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Abby Cunningham finished with a single, double and an RBI. Grace Bushue added a double while Tori Budde contributed two singles. Jennifer Jamison added a single and drove in two runs while Mya Harvey had a single and an RBI.

Class 2A Gillespie Sectional
Newton held a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning against Freeburg but the rains came and halted play Wednesday.
The game will resume today at 4:30 p.m., again, weather permitting.
If the Eagles win, they advance to the championship game Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Gillespie. Gillespie defeated Breese Mater Dei, 2-0 Tuesday.
