Effingham Captures Game 1 of 2022 Softball City Series

The Effingham Hearts captured Game 1 of the 2022 Softball City Series with a 15-8 victory over the St. Anthony Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon. The contest was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

The Hearts were on offensively, garnering 14 hits in the contest. EHS opened with two runs in the first but St. Anthony tallied three in the bottom of the frame to lead 3-2.

EHS moved ahead with three runs in the second and held an 8-6 lead after four. The Hearts tallied three more in the sixth and four in the seventh while St. Anthony scored two more in the fifth but couldn't get any more runs the rest of the way.

Grace Bushur did the job as a leadoff hitter for the Hearts. She reached base four out of five times, on an error, two singles and a home run, scored all four times and finished with three RBI.

Abby Cunningham also was a big hitter for the Hearts with a double, home run and four RBI.

Daelyn Dunston had two singles and scored three times. Tori Budde added a double and drove in two runs. Sawyer Atlhoff had a double and Saige Althoff had a double and an RBI and Sawyer Althoff added a double.

The Hearts finished with 14 hits in the contest.

St. Anthony tallied nine hits with its leadoff hitter, Cameron Rios garnering three singles. She scored once. Sidney Kibler had two doubles and drove in two runs.

Saige Althoff picked up the win on the mound for the Hearts going the distance allowing eight runs on nine hits, two walks and striking out three.

Effingham improved to 13-10 with the victory, while St. Anthony is now 21-4 on the season.

Game 2 will be played at 4pm Thursday at the Effingham High School softball field. The game will again be broadcast on KJ Country 102.3
