St. Anthony, WSS Advance To NTC Softball Tourney Title Contest

Effingham St. Anthony and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament, claimed victories Wednesday to advance to the championship game.

The Bulldogs downed Altamont by a 10-1 count. Both teams tallied a single run in the first inning. The Bulldogs then went on a tear, scoring six runs in the third and finishing out with three in the fourth.

Lucy Fearday had Altamont batters under control with 13 strikeouts. She threw a two-hitter and didn't allow a walk.

Haley Niebrugge led the way for the Bulldogs at the plate. Niebrugge pounded out two doubles and finished with three RBI. Addie Wernsing had a single, double and an RBI and Anna Faber a double and two RBI. Fearday and Madeline Kibler had a single and an RBI each. Cameran Rios added an RBI.

Altamont's two hits were singles by Bailey Teasley and Adria Denton. Teasley added an RBI.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg continued its offensive barrage with 15 hits in downing South Central, 9-1.

The Hatchets took a 3-0 opening inning lead and never looked back.

Sam Hayes continued her hot-hitting with a single in the first, single in the third, double in the fourth and single in the sixth. She drove in four runs.

Ava Richards also went on a tear at the plate with a single, two doubles and an RBI while Maddy Pfeiffer added three singles and an RBI. Ella Kinkelaar had a triple and Gabby Vonderheide had two singles  and an RBI. Karlie Bean contributed a single and an RBI.

Bean was the winning pitcher, keeping the hot-hitting bats of South Central under control. She went the distance allowing one run on two hits, one walk while fanning 12.

Jaylyn Michel had a single and an RBI for the Cougars while Brooklyn Garrett had a single.

In consolation bracket action, Dieterich was an 11-1 winner over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Movin' Maroons took a 3-0 first inning lead then tacked on single runs in the second and fourth around six runs in the third. The game ended in the fifth via the 10-run rule, 11-1.

Dieterich was led by Kaitlyn Boerngen with a solo homer, Marli Michel with a triple and Ruby Westendorf and Estella Meinhart with a double and two RBI each.

Boerngen went the five innings allowing one run on three hits, two walks and striking out seven.

CHBC was led by Addison Wasson with a double and an RBI.

In the other consolation bracket contest, Neoga trounced St. Elmo/Brownstown, 17-2.

The tournament comes to a close Friday at Evergreen Hollow Park with the third place game featuring Altamont and South Central at 4:15 p.m. and the championship game with St. Anthony and Windsor/Stew-Stras at 6 p.m. on the East Diamond. The consolation championship will be held at 4:15 p.m. with Neoga against Dieterich on the West Diamond.
