St. A, Altamont, WSS, S. Central Win Opening Round NTC Tourney Games, Area Softball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony, Altamont, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and South Central were opening round winners in the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament Monday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

The Bulldogs pounded out 12 runs in the first inning and finished the game with 10 runs in the third for a 22-0 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown in three innings.

St. Anthony's Addie Wernsing threw a no-hitter allowing no walks while striking out seven.

Meanwhile, St. Anthony had 18 hits and was aided by five SEB errors. Wernsing also took care of business on the offensive end with a single, home run and five RBI. Madeline Kibler added a triple, home run and four RBI. Stacie Vonderheide had a triple and three RBI and Grace Karolewicz a single, triple and two RBI. Haley Niebrugge added a double and Adysen Rios and Sydney Kibler had two singles and drove in a run each.

Lucy Fearday chipped in with a single and two RBI while Abbie Hatton and Nora Gannaway had a single and an RBI each.

In the second contest, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg blanked Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 15-0.

The Hatchets held a 9-0 opening inning lead and ended the contest in the third inning. 

Karlie Bean threw a no-hitter with one walk while striking out seven.

WSS had eight hits led by Natalie Hayes with two singles, a triple and four RBI, Karlie Bean with a triple and an RBI, Kaylynn Carey with a double and two RBI and Maddy Pfeiffer with a single and two RBI. Ella Kinkelaar added an RBI.

The third game went to Altamont over Neoga, 7-2.

Altamont edged out to a 2-0 first inning lead. Neoga tied in the top of the third, but Altamont came back with two in the bottom of the frame then added on three more in the fifth.

Bailey Teasley threw a six-hitter with two walks and six strikeouts.

Altamont had seven hits led by Teasley with a double, home run and three RBI, Peyton  Osteen with a single and two triples and Ellie McManaway with a triple.

Neoga was led by Haylee Campbell with a single, double and an RBI, Audrey Kepp with a double and Andrea Burcham with two singles.

South Central claimed the win over Dieterich, 8-1.

The Cougars had a four-run fourth inning. Dieterich tallied a run in the top of the sixth but South Central came back with three in the bottom of the sixth.

South Central had eight hits led by Kaitlyn Swift with two doubles and three RBI, Taegan Webster with two singles and an RBI, Lily Malone with a double and an RBI and Jaylyn Michel with a single and an RBI.

South Central improves to 15-8.

Dieterich was led by Marli Michel with a single and double, Lucie Jansen with a double and an RBI and Brittney Niemerg with a triple.

The tournament continues Wednesday with St. Anthony facing Altamont at 4:15 and Windsor/Stew-Stras against South Central at 6 in winner bracket play on the East Diamond. On the West Diamond, St. Elmo/Brownstown meets Neoga at 4:15 and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City takes on Dieterich at 6 in consolation bracket play.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then tacked on two in the second and one in the sixth for a 4-0 win over Shelbyville Monday at a game played at Eastern Illinois University's Wililams Field.

The Wooden Shoes had seven hits while Courtney Gibson threw a one-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Kaylee Niebrugge had a single and double while Erin Althoff had two singles and two RBI and Olivia Copple a single, triple and an RBI.

Shelbyville committed five errors.

At Paris

Paris went 13 innings before scoring the winning run in a 5-4 victory over Newton Monday.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Newton moved ahead 2-1 in the fourth. The score was tied at 3-3 in the sixth. Both teams then tallied a run in the 10th before Paris won in the 13th.

Newton was led by Amber Russell with three singles, two doubles and two RBI, Addy O'Dell with two doubles and a triple, Lexie Grove with a single and double and Bailee Frichtl and Allie Stanley with two singles each. Frichtl added an RBI.

Kayla "Kocher" Kocher went 13 innings and took the tough-luck loss. She allowed five runs on 11 hits, five walks and struck out 11.

MTC Tournament

Four games were contested in the MIdland Trail Conference Tournament Monday.

Waltonville edged North Clay/Clty City, 6-5; Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran downed Wayne City 12-2; Odin blanked Grayville 12-0 and Woodlawn trounced Webber Township (Bluford) 21-0.

Morgan Hance suffered the loss on the mound for North Clay/City. She went all seven innings allowing six runs, only one earned, walking two and striking out 10.

Hance had two singles, a double and a solo home run. Chelsea Beck had two singles, Gracie Barber had a single and an RBI and Hannah Kramer-McKinney had a single.

North Clay/Clay City drops to 2-1 on the season.

In Tuesday's semifinals, weather permitting, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran meets Odin at 4 p.m. followed by Woodlawn against Waltonville at 6. The third place and championship games will be played Wednesday at 4 and 6 p.m. at Clay City.
