Hearts, Bulldogs Split City Series Wins; Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony and Effingham claimed a victory each in the annual City Softball Series Wednesday.
In the opener, the Bulldogs came out a 7-3 winner. The Hearts took a 2-0 first inning lead as Kelli Utz reached base with a single and took second on a passed ball. She came home on a single by Kaylee Tonn. Tonn dented the plate but the Hearts left two runners stranded.
EHS pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third as Brandy Pontious singled, stole second and took third on an error. Deedra Myers' ground out brought Pontious home.
The Bulldogs came to life in the fifth with a run. Kristen Schuette singled, stole second and came home on a wild pitch. Then in the sixth, the gates opened up as St. Anthony tallied five runs. In the inning, Schuette singled and scored, Meghan Woltman drove in two runs with a single, Paige Koester singled, Morgan Gardewine reached base on an error and Makayla Walsh singled home a run.
The Bulldogs tacked on a final run in the seventh as Koester singled, took second on a wild pitch and came home on a ground out by Walsh.
St. Anthony had nine hits led by Schuette with three singles, Walsh with a single and two RBI and Kate Richards with a double and an RBI.
EHS had six hits led by Pontious with two singles.
In the second game, it was Effingham's turn to bring home the runs in a 10-1 victory.
The Hearts opened with a 2-1 lead then tacked on two more in the second and third innings and four in the fourth.
EHS had 15 hits in the game led by Myers with four singles anad two RBI. Brittany Beals had a single, double and an RBI, Hope Collier had two singles and Shelby Nunamaker had two singles and two RBI.
St. Anthony had three hits led by Hunter Niebrugge with two singles and an RBI.
The City Series final game will be held today unless rain cancels the event. If that's the case, the game will be played Friday.

At Teutopolis
Teutopolis High School pushed its record to 16-5 on the season with an 8-3 victory over Cumberland.
The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead before Cumberland took the lead with two in the top of the third. But the Shoes came roaring back, bringing home seven runs in the bottom of the fourth for the victory.
Kadi Borries had a home run in the fourth inning and finished with two RBI while Cowman had a double and two RBI and Apke a triple and an RBI. Hardiek chipped in with two singles. K. Borries picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with five walks and eight strikeouts.

Neoga picked up a National Trail Conference victory over Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick, 5-2.
The score was tied at 2-2 after three innings. Neoga tallied single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to claim the win. Posten had two singles while Roderick had a double and an RBI for the winners.
BCCH was led by Amanda Pierce with two singles.

St. Elmo handed Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran a 15-3 loss. The Eagles broke a 3-3 tie with a six-run sixth and a six-run seventh.
The Eagles had only one hit in the game while Christ Our Rock had five errors. St. Elmo improves to 6-13.
