Mattoon Sweeps EHS; Area Roundup

MATTOON -- Mattoon High School used good pitching in claiming a softball doubleheader victory over Effingham in Apollo Conference action Saturday.
In the opener, Kacey Starwalt pitched a two-hitter allowing no walks and striking out nine as the Green Wave won 10-0 in five innings via the 10-run rule. Starwalt struck out seven of the first nine Effingham batters she faced
Mattoon edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then tacked on a single run in the third, two more in the fourth and finished the game in the fifth with six runs.
In the second contest, the No. 8 ranked team in Class 3A downed Effingham 9-2. The Hearts had five hits in this contest but the Green Wave banged out 12 hits. EHS also committed two errors.
Mattoon edged out to a 2-0 lead after three innings but the Hearts came back to tie the score as Diedra Meyers singled home a run and then scored on a triple by Ciara Kronewitter. But that was the last of the runs for the Hearts as Mattoon tallied two in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Katelyn Fisher pitched the five-hitter with no walks and four strikeouts.

At Nokomis
St. Elmo downed Raymond-Lincolnwood 11-5. The Eagles stepped out to a 4-0 lead after three then had two in the fourth, one in the fifth and four more in the top of the seventh.
St. Elmo had a whopping 20 hits in the contest led by S. Maxey with four singles and Feezel with a single, double, home run and four RBI. the Eagles improve to 3-9.
At Nokomis

At Tuscola
Casey-Westfield won the Tuscola Invitational Saturday. The Warriors opened with an 11-2 victory over Windsor then downed Danville Schlarman 13-2 and defeated Tuscola 10-6 in eight innings in the championship game.
In the opener, Casey-Westfield took a 4-0 first inning lead and never looked back in the 11-2 win over Windsor. Windsor then beat Danville Schlarman 11-1 and took third place with a 6-0 victory over Oakland.
In the title contest, Casey-Westfield broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the second and third innings to pull within 6-5 after six innings. Tuscola knotted the score and Casey-Westfield won with five innings in the top of the eighth.
Casey-Westfield is now 11-3 and Windsor is 7-5.
At Ramsey
Ramsey captured the championshiop of its own tournament Saturday by beating Hillsboro 4-2, falling to Ramsey 5-2 and beating Stewardson-Strasburg 6-3. The Lancers tied Ramsey for the best record with a 2-1 but Ramsey won the title based on head-to-head competition.
Stew-Stras beat Ramsey 8-6. Kendall Knop picked the pitching win and also had two singles. Courtney Schultz had a single and a double and Lindsey Burton three singles.
At Pinckneyville
Teutopolis competed in the Pinckneyville Showcase Saturday split victories.
The Wooden Shoes stepped out to a 4-0 lead on Johnson City and went on for a 10-3 victory. T-town had 11 hits in the contest led by Swingler and Cowman with a single, double and an RBI each and Apke with three singles and three RBI. Wente contributed a double.
In the second game, Carterville edged Teutopolis 5-4. The Shoes tied the score at 2-2 in the third and took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth. But Carterville tallied one in the bottom of the fourth and fifth to tie the score and tallied the winning run in the seventh.
T-town had six hits led by K. Borries with three hits and three RBI and A. Borries with two hits.
