PEORIA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School struck quickly and had Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond under wraps, both on the mound and at bat, to take a 4-0 victory in the first game of the Class 1A State Softball Tournament at Louisville Slugger Complex in Peoria Wednesday.

The Bulldogs were on offensively and took advantage of eight hits while Lucy Fearday was tough on the mound. Cameron Rios and Fearday were the one-two punch at the plate. Rios had two singles, a triple and drew a walk to be the ultimate leadoff batter. She made it on base all four times with singles in the first and second, a walk in the fourth and a triple in the seventh.

Fearday finished offensively with a single, double, triple and an RBI in her spot as cleanup hitter. She drove in Rios in the first inning on a double. In the third she tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth she had a single and stole second and she finished out drawing a walk in the seventh.

Fearday was a terror on the mound as well for ALAH, holdilng the Knights to four hits while not allowing a walk and striking out five.

In the opening inning, St. Anthony's Rios led off with a single. Rios was sacrificed over to second by Addie Wernsing. With one out, Fearday knocked a double to right-center that scored Rios and the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead.

St. Anthony came right back in the second with another run. In a replica of the first inning, Sydney Kibler led off with a single to right field. She was sacrificed over by Stacie Vonderheide. Grace Karolewicz came up and singled to centerfield and scored Kibler and the Bulldogs were up 2-0.

The Bulldogs came up and again tallied a run in the third inning. With one out, Fearday tripled to right field and came home on a wild pitch and the Bulldogs held a 3-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond couldn't get anything going through the first three innings, going up and down. Hayley Niebrugge made an outstanding play in the second on a ball that was hit by the leadoff batter in the inning, Kailee Otto. Niebrugge made a great grab and throw for the out.

St. Anthony rattled again in the fifth as Fearday got a single and stole second but was left stranded. The lone inning, the Bulldogs went up and down was in the sixth.

The Knights put runners on in the fourth on singles by Charley Condill and Otto, both infield hits, but St. Anthony toughened up and got out of the frame without damage. ALAH went up and down in the sixth.

St. Anthony scored a final run in the top of the seventh. Once again, Rios led off the frame with a hit, this time a triple and came home on an error by the catcher as Wernsing sacrificed and got the RBI.

The Knights' Otto led off the seventh with an infield single but was the runners was left stranded as the Bulldogs got a batter on a ground ball, then took out the lead runner on a force play and a fly ball ended the game.

St. Anthony advances to the championship game with a 21-8 record and will face Glasford Illini Bluffs (16-1) at 2 p.m. today. Glasford Illini Bluffs defeated Orangeville Co-op, 6-3. ALAH dropped to 22-4 and faces Orangeville Co-op (18-2) at 1:30 today for third place.
