Millikin's Softball Season Comes To End

DECATUR -- Millikin University saw its season come to a close with its second loss in the NCAA Softball Tournament Friday.

The Big Blue fell to the top team in the nation, the DePauw Tigers, 4-2.

Millikin took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Cassie Reed walked, Gretchen Gould singled and Lexus Tennison drew a walk to load the bases. Kailey Pulec hit in the run on a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, Millikin scored again. Maddie Holland reached on an error followed by Pulec and Skielyr Trenkle loading the bases. Rylee Blake singled to left field, driving home the second run.

DePauw tallied a run in the bottom of the fourth then moved ahead with two in the fifth on three singles and a sacrifice bunt. DePauw scored a final run in the sixth and the Tigers led 4-2. Millikin couldn't get anything going in the final inning.

Effingham's Aly Armstrong threw an eight-hitter, allowing four walks and striking out five in the loss on the mound.

With the defeat, the Big Blue were eliminated from further tourney play and finished the season with a 32-13 record.

DePauw then went on to Saturday action and fell in the first game to Mt. St. Joseph, 9-1, but came back to beat Mt. St. Joseph to claim the regional title, 9-2.

DePauw will make it's fiifth appearance in the NCAA Championship Finals Thursday, May 27-Tuesday, June 1 at Moyer Park in Salem, Va. DePauw faces Wisconsin/Osh Kosh at 11 a.m. Thursday.
