EHS Nabs Three Weekend Wins, Area Softball Roundup

Effingham High School claimed three softball victories during weekend play.

The Hearts defeated Vandalia in Friday action, 13-2 in five innings.

The Hearts trailed the Vandals 2-1 after two innings then had a four-run third, a three-run fourth and finished with five runs in the fifth.

Taylor Armstrong knocked out two home runs and tallied five RBI while Sawyer Althoff hit a home run and tallied two RBI. Grace Bushur added a single, double and three RBI while Jaidi Davis and Emma Hardiek had a double each. Davis drove in two runs while Hardiek had one RBI.

Davis was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing two runs on one hit, one walk while striking out seven.

The Hearts then swept a doubleheader Saturday over Apollo Conference opponent Lincoln.

The opening contest counted towards the conference standings as the Hearts won 3-1.

Lincoln outhit the Hearts by a 7-5 count but had one more error with three.

EHS took a 1-0 lead and held that until the fifth when they tallied a single run again. Lincoln scored in the bottom of the fifth. The Hearts came back with a one-run sixth.

Davis had two singles and drove in a run while Riley Cunningham had a double and an RBI.

Davis was the winner on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits, seven walks and 11 strikeouts.

In the second contest, the Hearts didn't fool around, stepping out to a 3-0 opening inning lead then adding on three more in the second and four in the fifth for a 10-1 win.

EHS banged out 14 hits in the game, eight of those extra base hits. Hardiek led the way with a double, home run and four RBI while Davis had two doubles and an RBI. Jacy Boatman added a single and double while Abby Cunningham, Bushur and Armstrong had a dobule each. Armstrong added an RBI.

Armstrong went all five inings, allowng one run on seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

At Arcola

Effingham St. Anthony tallied two wins over the weekend.

The Bulldogs claimed a Friday victory over Arcola, 7-1.

St. Anthony outhit Arcola 10-5. Cameron Rios pounded out three singles and a double. Addie Wernsing had two singles and drove in two runs. Haley Niebrugge had a single and drove in two runs.

The Bulldogs held a 4-0 opening inning lead, added on a single run in the fifth and two in the seventh.

In Saturday action, the Bulldogs ended the game against Altamont in the fourth inning, 32-1.

The Bulldogs had a 10-run third and an 11-run fourth. 

Sydney Kibler and Lucy Fearday led the way for the Bulldogs. Kibler had a single, two doubles, a triple and four RBI and Fearday with four singles, a triple and two RBI. Madeline Kibler added two singles ,a double and three RBI while Stacie Vonderheide had two singles, a double and two RBI. Taylor Quandt added two singles and three RBI while Rios had two singles and two RBI. Kenzie Kabbes had two singles and two RBI.

Altamont was led by A Goeckner with a double.

Wernsing was the winning pitcher, going two innings, allowing no runs on three hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

At Sullivan

Altamont picked up a victory Friday over Sullivan, 13-5.

The Indians tallied a run in the fourth and led 4-2 in the fifth and 9-5 in the sixth. The Indians finished out with four in the seventh.

Altamont had 19 hits led by Olivia Eckhardt with a single, double, home run and three RBI while Kimberly Brummer had two singles, a double and two RBI. Abby Goeckner had a single, two doubles and an RBI while Bailey Teasley had a single, two doubles and two RBI. Macey Christy and Ellie McManaway had a single, double and two RBI each. Taylor Mette and Ciara Hankins had a double each.

Teasley went the distance allowing five runs on 10 hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

At Sullivan

South Central kept St. Elmo/Brownstown from scoring and tallied a 16-0 win in fuor innings Friday.

The Cougars pounded out 21 hits. Taegan had a single, double, home run and two RBI while Sydnee Garrett had a single, double, home run and five RBI and Kayli Swift had a single, double and an RBI. Halle Smith finished with two singles and an RBI, Meagan Smith a double and two RBI, Jaylyn Michel a double and triple; Lily Malone two singles and an RBI, Brooklyn Garrett two doubles and two RBI and Jordan Geiler two singles and an RBI.

The Cougars are now 2-0 in the National Trail Conference, 6-2 overall.

Baker had the lone hit for St. Elmo/Brownstown with a single.

At Strasburg

The host squad ripped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings but Newton came back with two in the fourth and led 7-5 after five innings and 8-5 in the top of the sixth. But Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg came back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a 9-8 win Friday.

WSS outhit the Eagles 15-12 and Newton finishied with three errors.

Leading Newton was Amber Russell with two singles, a double and an RBI, Kayla Kocher with a single, double and two RBI and Emma Kidwell with a double and an RBI.

WSS was led by Bean with a single, two doubles and four RBI, Pfeiffer with a single, two doubles and two RBI, Kinkelaar with a single, double and an RBI N. Hayes with two singles and an RBI, H. Hayes with two singles and Porter with a double.

Teutopolis fell to Charleston in a Saturday contest, 9-1.

The Trojans took a 1-0 opening inning lead and then added on six in the fourth. The lone Wooden Shoes run came in the fourth.

T-town outhit Charleston 9-8. Leading the way for the Shoes were Tia Probst with two singles and a double, Courtney Gibson with two doubles and Estella Mette and Erin Althoff with two singles each. Mette had an RBI.
