WSS, Jasper County Headed To State In Softball

TEUTOPOLIS -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Junior High School broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 4-2 win over Casey-Westfield to claim the Class 1A Teutopolis Softball Sectional Saturday.

Casey-Westfield edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead before WSS tied in the second. Casey-Westfield led 2-1 in the top of the third but WSS came back to tie again.

WSS had eight hits in the contest led by Addie Wernsing with two doubles, Gabby Vonderheide with a double and an RBI and Ainslie Eident with a triple and an RBI.

Wernsing was the winner on the mound, going all seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits, three walks and striking out five.

WSS improves to 22-3 on the season and heads to the State Tournament Friday to face Brimfield (24-1) at noon. The winner advances to the semifinals Saturday at 10 a.m.

Class 2A Cumberland Sectional

Jasper County claimed the championshp of the Cumberland Sectional Saturday with a 12-2 win over Meridian in six innings.

Jasper County banged out nine hits and was aided by four Meridian errors. A. Mulvey had a single, double, triple and an RBI while B. Frichtl had a triple and three RBI, A. O'Dell a triple and K. Martin two singles and an RBI.

Mulvey picked up the pitching win on a three-hitter with two walks and four strikeouts.

Jasper County advances with a 25-1 record to the State Tournament Friday and will face Tremont (18-3) at 10:30 a.m. The winner advances to a semifinal game at 10:30 a.m.
