Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony claimed first round junior high softball regional victories Wednesday.

Effingham handed Cumberland an 11-1 loss in five innings at the Class 2A Cumberland Regional.

The Mustangs banged out 16 hits led by M. Harvey with three singles and three RBI, R. Boone with three singles and an RBI, S. Althoff with a single, triple and two RBI, S. Donaldson with a single, double and an RBI, J. Bierman with a single and double and B. Beals with two singles and an RBI.

S. Althoff picked up the pitching win on a two-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts.

Cumberland was led by Sauers with a triple.

In a game at Newton, Jasper County pounded Vandalia 12-2 in six innings.

Jasper County had 15 hits led by A. Mulvey with two singles, a triple and three RBI, B. Frichtl with three singles and two RBI, M. Miller with a single, double and two RBI, A. Stanley with two singles and an RBI and A. O'Dell with two singles.

Jasper County has a 22-1 record.

Effingham and Jasper County now meet at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In the other games Wednesday, Charleston blanked Lawrenceville Parkview, 10-0 and Mattoon won over Marshall 11-0.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Winning opening round contests at the Altamont Regional were Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, Teutopolis, Effingham St. Anthony and South Central Wednesday.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg blanked Brownstown/St. Elmo 16-0 in three innings. WSS opened with a five-run first then had a six-run second and a five-run third.

Ella Kinkelaar had three doubles and drove in two runs for the winners. Samantha Hayes had a single, two doubles and an RBI while Kinley Quast had two singles,a  triple and three RBI. Marisa Daniels added a double.

Stacie Vonderheide threw the three innings allowing one hit, one walk and striking out six.

BSE was led by Ireland with a single.

In the second game, Teutopolis edged Altamont 5-4 despite being outhit by a 6-4 count. Altamont committed 10 errors.

Altamont took a 1-0 lead in th top of the third but the Wooden Shoes tallied four in the bottom of the inning. Altamont came back to tie the score at 4-4 in the fourth. The game went into extra innings with T-town winning in the bottom of the ninth.

E. Althoff led T-town with two singles.

Leading Altamont were P. Garrard with a single and double and G. Nelson with two singles and an RBI. Altamont ends the season with an 8-7 record.

The third contest went to St. Anthony over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 15-0 in three innings. The Bullpups rushed out to an 11-0 opening inning lead and that was the game.

Addison Nuxoll threw a no-hitter with two walks and four strikeouts. She also aided her own cause with two singles and two RBI.

Adysen Rios had two singles, a double and two RBI while Madeline Kibler had a double and drove in two runs.

In the fourth contest, South Central ended Neoga's season with an 11-1 victory. No other stats reported.

Saturday's games will find Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against Teutopolis at 9 a.m. at Gilbert Park in Altamont followed by St. Anthony taking on South Central at 10:30 a.m. The winners advance to the championship game Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional

Clay City was the lone area squad advancing in the Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional Wednesday.

Clay City defeated Dieterich 6-3. Morgan Hance struck out 17 batters, walked five, allowed one hit and three runs, one earned.

Hance also led the team in hitting with two hits. Keidra Kuenstler had one hit and two RBI.

The Cubs are now 7-4 on the season and finished WEAA Conference play with a 4-2 record.

In the opening game of the regional, Casey-Wesfield blanked Hutsonville/Palestine, 15-0. Paris Crestwood beat Red Hill (Bridgeport), 7-2. Martinsville was a 13-5 winner over Oblong.

Clay City now faces Casey-Westfield at 10 a.m. at Fairview Park Softball Diamond in Casey Saturday followed by Paris Crestwood taking on Martinsville at 11:30. The winners will meet for the regional championship at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
