EHS' Grad Aly Armstrong Pitches Millikin To Win

The Millikin softball team won two games at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament on April 13 in Bloomington. The Big Blue defeated Wisconsin Eau Claire 6-0 and the University of Chicago 7-6.

Freshman starting pitcher Aly Armstrong (Effingham, H.S.) was dominant in the win over Wisconsin Eau Claire. Armstrong threw seven shutout innings allowing just four hits while striking out eight.

Millikin got all the runs it would need with a three run first inning. The Big Blue padded its lead with three more in the fifth innings. Maggie Comerford (Decatur, Meridian H.S.) and Alyssa White (Mokena, Lincoln Way East H.S.) had run scoring singles in the first inning for Millikin. White hit a three-run homerun in the Big Blue fifth. White finished the game 2-3 with four RBI.

The Big Blue rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to defeat the University of Chicago 7-6. White had the game winning hit with a two-run single. Comerford was 3-3 with two RBI. Bailey Gowin (Mt. Zion, H.S.) had two hits for Millikin. Gracie Brookens (Blue Mound, Meridian H.S.) was the winning pitcher in relief.

The Millikin softball battled to the end with fourth ranked Illinois Wesleyan but fell short dropping a doubleheader to the Titans on April 10 at the Workman Family Softball Field in Decatur.

Pitching ruled the night with Illinois Wesleyan winning game one 2-0 in 10 innings and taking the nightcap 1-0.

Armstrong threw all 10 innings for Millikin allowing eight hits and two runs while striking out 11. Armstrong kept the Titans off the board until the 10th inning.

Taylor Jordan (Moweaqua, Central A&M H.S.) went 3-4 for Millikin with White picking up two hits.

Rachel Patting (Rock Island, Alleman H.S.) pitched for Millikin in game two. She limited Illinois Wesleyan to four hits with two strikeouts. Pitching six shutout innings before surrendering the game winner with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

 Millikin is now 20-8 on the season.
