NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State University softball team continued to excel in the classroom during the spring 2018 semester, breaking its grade point average record.

The Redbirds posted a program-record 3.59 grade point average, replacing their previous program-best of 3.57. A group of 11 student-athletes led the team with perfect 4.0 GPAs during the season, tying for the most among women’s sports at Illinois State this semester.

“I’m very proud of our team for their academic accomplishments this past semester,” head coach Melinda Fischer shared. “For the last four spring semesters, we have continued to break out GPA record and this group did it in an outstanding fashion with 11 players earning a perfect 4.0.”

Additionally, 23 Redbirds were named to the AFNI Honor Roll – an Illinois State distinction awarded to student-athletes with a 3.0 GPA or better.

“We owe a lot of our continued academic success to Gabrielle Styles and her commitment to academic excellence in the study center,” Fischer commented.

Members of the team are Teutopolis High School gradutes Kadi and Anni Borries.

The Redbirds will return to campus in the fall, looking to maintain their academic success achieved during the spring semester.
