Windsor/Stew-Stras Advances To Title Softball Game

EAST PEORIA -- Argenta-Oreana High School struck early and held a 1-0 lead on Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at the Class 1A State Softball Tournament Friday. That lead stood up through three innings.

Then it was the Hatchets turn. In the top of the fourth, Mackinzee Reynolds drew a base on balls. She was sacrificed over to second by Ava Bennett. Katrina Davis then singled and Reynolds stood poised at third base. Carson Cole produced a squeeze bunt and Reynolds came home to knot the score at 1-1. Cole was safe on the play on a fielder's choice and an error.

Megan Schlechte followed with another squeeze bunt that scored a second run as Davis came home and the Hatchets took the lead. Calla Roney reached on a fielder's choice and Schlechte advanced to third and Cole scored on an error. Mackenzi Tabbert then hit a home run over the right centerfield fence and the Hatchets held a 5-0 lead.

Argenta-Oreana had a hit in the fourth but didn't produce another run. Calla Roney knocked down the side in the fifth. Then came the sixth, Camilyn Newbanks singled up the middle then proceeded to steal second. Tatiana Garcia followed with a double, scoring Newbanks. Keely Meadow came on to pinch run for Garcia and stole third then scored on an error and suddenly the Bombers were within 5-3.

Argenta-Oreana put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh. But the Hatchets toughened up and got a ground out and Roney struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Roney finished with a four-hitter to improve to 15-2 on the season. She allowed only one walk and struck out 10.

Tabbert had a home run while Schlechte and Hannah Hayes had two singles each. Schlechte drove in a run.

The Hatchets improve to 27-4 on the season and will now face Goreville at 9 a.m. for the state championship. Goreville took a 1-0 win over London Mills Spoon River Valley Co-op. Argenta-Oreana will meet London Mills at 1 p.m. for third place.

The times were changed for both Class 1A and 2A softball due to weather predictions. The championship of the 2A is now at 11 a.m. with the third place contest at 3 p.m.
