Class 1A Hutsonville/Palestine Regional

South Central, for only the second time in the softball program, captured a regional championship Saturday. The last time the Cougars won a title was in 1994.

The Cougars defeated Woodlawn, 5-1 to win the Hutsonville/Palestine Regional. Woodlawn took a 1-0 lead in the third. South Central was quiet until the sixth when they tallied all five runs.

Zoe Johnston had a two-run homer while Lexie Reid, Sydnee Garrett and Kaylie Swift had a single each. Katie Shumate added an RBI.

"This game was a pitcher's duel between our Sydnee Garrett and Woodlawn's Kalyn Crider," said Coach Gary Kapper. "We scored our five runs on two errors along with a base hit by Lexie, an RBI by Katie and Zoe's homer. Woodlawn went down in order in the bottom of the seventh on a line out, a strikeout and a pop-up.

"Sydnee pitched a great game having control of her pitches all day and our defense played great also. This was a total team effort."

The Cougars advance with a 14-7 record to the Marissa Sectional Wednesday and will face either New Athens or Valmeyer at 4:30 p.m. Those two teams play today.
