EHS Breaks On Top in City Series With Shutout Win

The Effingham Hearts pulled in front in the 2018 Softball City Series Wednesday with a 5-0 win over the St. Anthony Bulldogs. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Aly Armstrong threw a one-hit shutout to lead Effingham to the win. The lone St. Anthony hit was a fifth inning double by Jacy Boatman. Armstrong walked two and struck out seven.

Effingham plated a run in the first. Lauryn Douthit doubled with one out and was driven home by Jaidi Davis' single.

The Hearts picked up a run in the third. With one out, Douthit was hit by a pitch. Carsyn Fearday was then hit with a pitch to push Douthit to second. Davis again singled to score Douthit.

Effingham scored in the fifth when Armstrong tripled with two outs and pinch runner Emma Huss was then singled home by Skyler Schafer.

The Hearts scored their final two runs in the seventh. Davis doubled for her third hit of the game to lead off the inning. After an error moved her to third, Schafer singled Armstrong home, and then a walk and an error scored Schafer.

Allie Day took the loss for St. Anthony, allowing five runs, four earned, in seven innings, walking two and fanning four.

At the plate for Effingham: McKenzie Wittenberg--single, walk...Lauryn Douthit--double, hit by pitch, two runs scored...Carsyn Fearday--two hit by pitches...Jaidi Davis--double, two singles, run scored, RBI...Aly Armstrong--triple, run scored...Skyler Schafer--two singles, run scored...Emma Hardiek--single, walk.

At Altamont

Cumberland had a total of 11 hits and handed Altamont a 10-3 loss in action Wednesday.

The Pirates stepped out to a 5-0 first inning lead but Altamont battled back with three runs in the second. Cumberland then had a two-run third, scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Danae Sowers led the Pirates with two singles, a double and two RBI while Destiny Williams had two singles and two RBI and Sadie Oakley a single, double and three RBI.

The Indians had 10 hits led by Katie Grimsley and Ashley Goeckner with two singles each. Caitlyn White added a double and an RBI while Abby Goeckner had a double. The Indians drop to 8-18 on the season.

At Altamont

At Mount Carmel

Newton claimed a 3-1 victory over Mount Carmel in action Wednesday.

The Eagles tallied all three runs in the first inning. Mount Carmel's run came in the sixth.

Newton had three hits led by K. Smith with a double and two RBI. Smith also was the winning pitcher, going three innings, allowing one hit, one walk and striking out three.

At Clay City

North Clay/Clay City fell to Waltonville/Sesser-Valier in the semifinals of the Midland Trail Conference Tournament Wednesday.

Waltonville edged NC/CC, 10-9. In the second contest, Woodlawn beat Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 11-5.

The tournament comes to a close today as NC/CC faces CORL at 4 p.m. for third place while Waltonville takes on Woodlawn at 6 p.m. for the championship.
