The Effingham Hearts defeated the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes for the second straight day in high school softball Tuesday, but the second win was much more of a chore.

Effingham edged T-Town 3-2 in eight innings in a contest at Teutopolis heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. The Hearts beat the Shoes 7-2 in a Monday game.

Effingham started the scoring in the first inning. With one out, Lauryn Douthit tripled. Carsyn Fearday doubled her home. The next two batters were retired, ending the threat.

Teutopolis tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Marianna Hemmen singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, then stole third base. Sadie Bueker's fly ball to centerfield plated Hemmen with the tying run.

Neither team scored again until Effingham regained the lead in the sixth.

With one out, Fearday bunted for a base hit, then stole second. Jaidi Davis then singled Fearday home to make it 2-1.

Teutopolis again tied the game in the bottom of the frame.

Alli Brumleve singled to lead off the inning, then was bunted to second. A base hit by Lauren Hemmen scored Brumleve to make it 2-2.

The game went to the eighth inning, where Effingham got a lead off double by Fearday. A fielder's choice moved Fearday to third with Jaidi Davis safe at first. Aly Armstrong then hit a ball back to the pitcher but when the pitcher threw to first for the out, Fearday made a mad dash to the plate and was safe. Effingham almost scored a second run, but a safe call at the plate was later overturned.

This time, the Shoes couldn't come up with an answer as they went down in order in the bottom of the inning and the Hearts had the extra-inning win.

Aly Armstrong got the win in relief for Effingham to improve to 6-3 on the season. Armstrong went 1-2/3 innings, allowing one hit and fanning two batters. Freshman Jaidi Davis pitched the first 6-1/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out seven.

Emma Beckman took the tough loss for Teutopolis, pitching into the eighth, giving up three earned runs on nine hits and a walk while fanning three. Alli Brumleve got the three outs in the eighth, allowing one hit.
