WSS Captures NTC Softball Tourney Title, Hearts Fall

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament Friday.
The Hatchets blanked Effingham St. Anthony 9-0. WSS edged out to a 1-0 first inning lead then had a two-run third, a three-run fourth, a two-run fifth and finished out with a run in the sixth.
Windsor/Stew-Stras had nine hits, six of those extra base hits. Megan Schlechte hit a triple, home run and had four RBI while Mackenzi Tabbert had a single, triple and three RBI. Calla Roney, Hannah Hayes and Mackenzee Reynolds had a double each. Reynolds drove in two runs.
Roney threw a two-hitter with one walk and 14 strikeouts. The lone hits for the Bulldogs were singles by Jacy Boatman and Grace Hakman.
In the third place contest, South Central edged Neoga 12-11 as both teams had big hitting nights.
The score was tied at 2-2 until the fifth when South Central moved ahead 7-5. Neoga took a 9-7 lead in the fourth and held a 11-10 lead going into the seventh. That's when the Cougars tallied two for the win.
Katie Shumate led the Cougars with three singles and a two-run homer. Kayli Swift had two singles, a double and an RBI while Lexie Reid had a single, double and an RBI. Angelica Rivera and Jordan Geiler had two singles and an RBI each. The Cougars improve to 10-5.
Neoga was led by Jessica Atwell with two singles, a double, triple and three RBI, Makenzie Saunders with two singles, a double and an RBI and Andrea Estay with a single and two doubles.
The consolation championship went to St. Elmo/Brownstown over Dieterich, 11-5.
Dieterich took a 2-1 first inning lead. SEB came back to lead 6-5 after four and then had a five-run sixth.
Both teams had 11 hits.

At Effingham
Flora came calling and blanked Effingham 3-0 in regular season softball action Friday.
Flora outhit the Hearts 7-1 as Sydney Cammon threw a one-hitter for the Wolves. She did not give up a walk and struck out eight.
Meanwhille, teammates had seven hits led by Jennings with two home runs and three RBI, Allen with a single and double and Hemelick and Cartright with a double each.
Effingham's lone hit was a single by Lauryn Douthit.
