EHS Wins Three, Area Softball Roundup

Effingham High School captured three softball victories over the weekend.
The Hearts pounded Nokomis in Friday play, 24-1 in a five-inning contest.
EHS held a 4-1 opening inning lead then had eight-run innings in the third and fourth and finished out with four in the fifth.
The Hearts pounded out 26 hits led by Lauryn Douthit with three singles, a home run and five RBI, Aly Armstrong with four singles and two RBI, Jaidi Davis with a single, two doubles and four RBI, Emma Budde with a single, two doubles and two RBI, Morgan Krouse with two singles, a double and four RBI, Carsyn Fearday with a single, home run and two RBI and Taylor Armstrong with two doubles. McKenzie Wittenberg and Skylar Schafer had two singles each. Wittenberg added two RBI.
In Saturday Apollo Conference action, the Hearts swept a doubleheader over Lincoln. EHS won the opener 8-3 then came back to take a 9-0 victory.
In the opener, the Hearts' Davis threw a one-hitter with three walks and three strikeouts. Armstrong had a single and double while Budde had a double and Douthit two singles.
In the second game, the Hearts blanked Lincoln 9-0. Davis picked up the win again on a one-hitter with eight walks and 10 strikeouts.
Budde had a double and triple while Douthit had two singles, a double and an RBI. Fearday contributed a single, double and an RBI and Davis a double and three RBI.

At Newton
Newton went 3-0 to capture its own softball invitational Friday.
The Eagles edged Olney 5-4 then downed Effingham St. Anthony 9-0 and won over Altamont 16-4 to finish with the three wins. The Eagles were followed by Olney 2-1, Altamont 1-2 and St. Anthony 0-3.
Other scores included Altamont edging St. Anthony 1-0, Olney beating Altamont 3-2 and Olney winning over St. Anthony 7-1.

Altamont headed to Strasburg Saturday and fell to Hillsboro 9-5.
Hillsboro took a 4-0 first inning lead then tallied two over the next two innings and finished with one in the fifth.
Altamont was led by Katie Grimsley with two singles and an RBI and Abby Goeckner with a double and two RBI.
The Indians drop to 5-10 on the season.

South Central scored two runs in the fifth and sixth inning in blanking St. Elmo/Brownstown 4-0 Friday. The game was a National Trail Conference contest.
South Central had six hits led by Kate Shumate with two singles and Jordan Geiler with a triple. Sydnee Garrett picked up the pitching win on a one hitter, with nine strikeouts.
South Central improves to 3-4 in the NTC, 6-4 overall.

WSS took a 12-0 opening inning lead and never looked back. The Hatchets had 15 hits in the contest.
