WSS, Neoga, CHBC, Altamont Nab NTC Tourney Openers

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, Neoga, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Altamont claimed opening round victories in the National Trail Conference Softball Tournament Monday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

Top-seeded Windsor/Stew-Stras advanced with an easy 15-0 win over No. 8 seeded Dieterich in the first game. The Hatchets stepped out to a 3-0 first inning lead then tallied three more in the second, five in the third and finished the game with four in the fourth.

Six extra base hits guided the Hatchets. Mackenzi Tabbert led the way with three including a single, double, home run and six RBI. Calli Roney had a solo home run. Taylor Rentfro had a single, triple and two RBI. Carson Cole and Ava Bennett had a double each. Cole added an RBI. Megan Schlechte had two singles and an RBI.

Schlechte was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing one hit, no walks and striking out eight.

The one hit came from Bannick with a single.

In the second contest, No. 7 Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City upset No. 2 seeded Effingham St. Anthony 7-5.

The Bobcats ran off to a 4-1 first inning lead. St. Anthony came back with a run in the third and tied the score in the fourth. CHBC then took a 5-4 lead in the fifth and pushed that to 7-4 in the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs pulled within 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth but fell short.

CHBC only had five hits compared to 10 for St. Anthony. Wheeler, Kirchhofer, Johnson, Oldham and Dye had a single each. Kirchhofer and Oldham brought home two runs while Johnson and Wojcik had an RBI each.

St. Anthony was led by Kabbes with a single, double and an RBI, Hakman two singles and an RBI and Gibson two singles.

In the third contest, Neoga handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 14-6 loss. The No. 4 Indians took a 4-1 first inning lead and led 8-6 after three. Neoga then had three-run innings in the fourth and sixth for the 14-6 win.

Kelsey Partlow had a single, triple and two RBI while Titus had three singles and two RBI, Saunders a single, double and three RBI, Lydia Gentry a double and an RBI, Taylor Lee two singles and Cheyenne Vondrak two singles.

SEB was led by Brown with a solo home run, Maxey with two singles and an RBI, Moss with two singles and an RBI and Nolen with two singles and an RBI.

In the final game, Altamont edged South Central 4-3. The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the first inning then tacked on another run in the fourth. South Central scored one in the fifth and pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth. However, Altamont came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win.

Grimsley had a single, triple and an RBI for the winners while Duckwitz had two singles and Burns had a double. The Indians improve to 9-13 on the season.

South Central was led by Sigirst with a double.

The tournament will continue today instead of Wednesday. Windsor/Stew-Stras will now face Neoga at 4:15 while CHBC will take on Altamont at 6 in winner bracket play. In consolation bracket action, Dieterich faces St. Elmo/Brownstown at 4:15 and St. Anthony takes on South Central at 6. The tournament will come to a close Friday.

Teutopolis stepped out to a 1-0 first inning lead then had an 11-run fifth and finished with a 15-4 win over Shelbyville Monday.

The Wooden Shoes banged out 19 hits in the contest led by R. Drees with three singles and two RBI, M. Hemmen with two singles, a double and an RBI, J. Drees with a single, double and two RBI, Brumleve with two singles, a double and four RBI, Bueker with two singles, Mette with two singles and Niebrugge with a double and an RBI.

The Shoes are now 7-9 on the season.

At Newton

Newton scored in the bottom of the sixth to edge Paris 6-5 in action Monday.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning and led 2-0 in the top of the fourth. Newton came back with six runs in the bottom the inning then tacked on a final run in the sixth. Paris attempted a comeback with three in the top of the seventh only to fall a run short.

Shipman and Richards had a double each for the Eagles while Hardiek had two singles, T. Smith a single, double and an RBI and Stanley two doubles, a triple and two RBI.

Newton is now 13-8 on the season.
