WSS Downs St. A, EHS Falls In Softball DH

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School handed Effingham St. Anthony a loss in National Trail Conference softball play Thursday, 4-1.

The Hatchets stepped out quickly with a 2-1 first inning lead then tacked on two more in the sixth.

Tabbert had a single, triple and an RBI while Rentfro had three singles and an RBI and Cole two singles. Roney was the winning pitcher on a three-hitter with no walks and nine strikeouts.

Kabbes led St. Anthony with a triple.

At Windsor

At Mount Zion

Effingham fell in an Apollo Conference doubleheader to Mount Zion Thursday.

The Braves won 7-5. Mount Zion took a 2-0 first inning lead and led 4-1 after three. The Hearts came back to tie the score with two in the fourth and one in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. But the Braves tallied three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.

Effingham was led by Kersey with a solo home run, Funneman with a single, double and two RBI, Krouse with a double, Fearday with two singles and two RBI and Budde with two singles.

In the second contest, the two teams were tied at 2-2 in the first and EHS moved ahead 4-2 in the top of the third. However, the Braves came back with four in the bottom of the third then tallied three more in the fifth for a 12-5 victory.

Wright had a single, home run and three RBI for the Hearts while Funneman had two singles, Douthit a double and an RBI and Armstrong a double.

At Beecher City

St. Elmo/Brownstown banged out 12 hits while Oberlink threw a two-hitter as the Eagles beat Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 8-1 in National Trail Conference action Thursday.

SEB took a 1-0 first inning lead then tacked on one more in the second, fourth and sixth and four in the third. Oberlink was the winning pitcher on a two-hitter with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Maxey and Philpot had a single and double each. Maxey added two RBI and Philpot one. Gathe had two singles and two RBI and Parkison two singles.

Doty had a triple for CHBC.

At Beecher City

Teutopolis played host to Neoga and pounded out 12 hits and scored 17 runs in a 17-2 victory in five innings.

Mette had a single, home run and five RBI for the Wooden Shoes. Bueker added a single, double and an RBI while Funneman had two singles and two RBI.

Beckman went three innings for the win, allowing one hit, two walks and striking out four. Drees came on in the fourth allowing two hits, two runs, one walk and striking out two. The Shoes are now 5-8 on the season.

Titus had a double for Neoga.

Newton came back with a 3-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth to score five runs for a 7-3 victory over Lawrenceville.

Kristen Hardiek picked up the pitching win, going three innings, allowing four hits and striking out three.

Alison Russell had a single, double and two RBI for the Eagles.
