EHS Blanks Shelbyville, Area Softball Roundup

SHELBYVILLE -- Effingham High School broke the game open with four runs in the fourth and went on to blank Shelbyville 9-0 in softball action Tuesday.
The Hearts had 10 hits in the contest led by Wright with a single, two doubles and an RBI, Fearday with three singles and two RBI and Budde with a triple and two RBI.
Armstrong picked up the pitching win, going all seven innings, allowing three hits, no walks and striking out 13.
In a Saturday Apollo Conference doubleheader, the Hearts lost to Mattoon 4-2 and 8-6.
Mattoon took a 2-0 lead after three innings and led 4-1 after four. The Hearts attempted a comeback in the seventh only to fall short.
Wright and Schafer had two singles and an RBI each.
In the other contest, Mattoon claimed an 8-6 win despite EHS outhitting the Green Wave 10-9.
Fearday had three singles and an RBI while Douthit and Schafer had a single and a double each. Funneman had a double and an RBI.

At Cowden
South Central outlasted Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in competition Tuesday, 15-13.
The score was tied at 6-6 after two innings and 8-8 after three. The Cougars moved ahead 10-9 in the fourth but CHBC came back with a four-run fifth but South Central tied at 13-13 in the top of the sixth then tallied two runs in the seventh for the win.
Both teams had 15 hits but CHBC finished with seven errors.
Johnston hit a single, two home runs and four RBI for the winners while Rivera had two singles, a home run and three RBI, Reid two doubles and two RBI, Sigrist two singles, a double and an RBI and Hilmes two singles and an RBI. South Central improves to 2-4 in the National Trail Conference, 3-8 overall.
CHBC was led by Wheeler and Doty with three singles and a double each. Wheeler had three RBI and Doty had two. Kirchhofer had a single, double and four RBI and Johnson a single, triple and three RBI.

The Indians took a 4-2 opening inning lead and was never challenged. Saunders had a double while Titus had a triple and an RBI for the winners.
