SWAT 16U Softball Team Wins Chill Summer Slam

The SWAT fastpitch 16U softball team finished first at the Charleston Chill Summer Slam NSA Qualifier last weekend.

Team members include Katie Kabbes (Effingham St. Anthony), Audrey Winters (Altamont), Keidron Duckwitz (Altamont), Brooke Burns (Altamont), Elizabeth Biggs (Altamont), Olivia Shipman (Newton), Kristen Hardiek (Newton), Mariah Earnest (Newton), Taylor Smith (Newton), Josey Hyett (Newton) and Claire Guyon (Cumberland).

Monticello Magic beat SWAT 4-3 in the opener on Friday. Monticello tallied single runs in the first, and second. SWAT moved ahead with three in the top of the fourth but Monticello came back to tie in the bottom of the frame then move ahead with a run in the fifth for the win.

Burns had two singles for SWAT while Smith had two singles and an RBI and Kabbes a double and two RBI.

In action Saturday, SWAT trounced the Shelbyville Lakers 15-2. SWAT jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead and had a nine-run fifth.

Hardiek and Guyon had a single and a double each. Guyon had three RBI and Hardiek one. Kabbes had two singles and three RBI and Winters a double and an RBI. Winters pitched a three-hitter with two strikeouts.

SWAT then downed Pana Central IL Elite 8-5. SWAT held a 6-0 lead until the fifth when Central IL Elite came back with three runs. But SWAT tallied two more in the sixth.

SWAT had 12 hits led by Hardiek with a single, triple and an RBI, Guyon with two singles and an RBI and Smith with a single, double and two RBI.

SWAT then defeated Effingham Flames 8-6. Effingham held a 6-5 lead in the third before SWAT came back with three in the fifth.

Burns had three singles and an RBI while Smith had two singles and an RBI. Hardiek produced a double.

In Sunday action, SWAT won over Green Bay, Wi. Impact, 1-0. The lone run came in the fourth inning.

Winters had two singles and drove in the game-winning run. Hardiek pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts.

SWAT then finished out with a 9-1 win over Highland, Ind. Regional Sports Rumble. Hardiek had a single, double and three RBI while Biggs had a single, triple and two RBI. Winters contributed a double and Smith had two singles and three RBI.

Hardiek was the winning pitcher on a four-hitter with no walks and one strikeout.
