Effingham's Madison Weis homered to left in the top of the 10th inning for the game's only run as the Lady Hearts defeated Teutopolis, 1-0, Tuesday.

The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

The homer by the Hearts' second baseman broke up a terrific pitchers' duel between Effingham's Aly Armstrong and Teutopolis' Kadi Borries.

Both hurlers were perfect the first time through the opponents' batting order. The first baserunner came in the top of the fourth when Hope Collier doubled for Effingham. Teutopolis got their first baserunner in the bottom of the fourth when Kadi Borries reached second on a dropped fly ball. Neither team could cash in at the plate, though.

Carsyn Fearday singled for Effingham with two outs in the sixth, but a strikeout ended the inning. Jessica Drees got the first Teutopolis hit with a single in the fifth, but was erased on a fielder's choice and the next batter popped out to end the inning.

Kadi Borries walked to lead off the Teutopolis seventh, and eventually reached third base, but Armstrong fanned the next three batters to end the threat.

Sidney Brumleve singled to lead off the Teutopolis eighth, but Armstrong again got out of the inning, helped by a caught stealing courtesy of Hearts' catcher Kaylee Tonn.

Tonn singled with two outs in the ninth but Kadi Borries retired the next batter to end that threat.

After the Lady Shoes were retired in order in the ninth, Weis' one out shot over the left field fence gave the Hearts the only run either team would score.

T-Town didn't go down without a fight, even then. Allison Apke singled to lead off the 10th and Danielle Repking doubled to put both runners in scoring position with nobody out, but Armstrong again came through, fanning the next three batters to post the win.

The sophomore Armstrong was magnificent, allowing just four hits in pitching the 10-inning shutout, and walking just one batter while recording 17 strikeouts.

Kadi Borries also pitched a great game for Teutopolis, allowing just five hits and the one run while not walking a batter in her 10 innings, striking out nine.

At the plate for Effingham: Carsyn Fearday--single; Kaylee Tonn--single; Hope Collier--double; Madison Weis--home run, run, RBI; Aly Armstong--single

At the plate for Teutopolis: Kadi Borries--walk; Allison Apke--single; Danielle Repking--double; Jessica Drees--single; Sidney Brumleve--single

Effingham improved to 18-4 on the spring, while Teutopolis dropped their second straight to stand at 25-3.
