Four Shutouts as NTC Softball Tourney Opens, Area Roundup

All four winners in opening round play of the National Trail Conference Girls Softball Tournament blanked their opponents in action Monday evening.

The tournament continues Wednesday as Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg faces South Central at 4:15 p.m. and St. Anthony takes on  Altamont at 6 p.m. in winner bracket play. In consolation action, St.Elmo/Brownstown faces Dieterich at 4:15 p.m. followed by Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick against Neoga at 6 p.m.

 

Windsor/Stew-Stras 11, St. Elmo/Brownstown 0

The top-seeded Windsor/Stew-Stras squad blanked St. Elmo/Brownstown in five innings.

Calla Roney pitched three innings, allowing two hits while Kayla Newkirk went the final two innings, allowing one hit.

Mackenzi Tabbert had two triples and five RBI for the Hatchets. Carson Cole had a single and triple.

St. Anthony's Jenna Woltman and Alli Day combined to pitch a two-hitter with three walks and nine strikeouts. Woltman was listed as the winning pitcher, going three innings allowing one hit, one walk and striking out five.

Woltman also was on from the offensive side of the softball with a double, home run and three RBI. Maddie Schuette banged out two home runs and tallied four RBI. A. Day had a single, double and an RBI and Hunter Niebrugge three singles and two RBI.

BCCH was led by Johnson and Wojcik with a single each.

South Central blanked Dieterich 11-0 in five innings behind 12 hits.

Serina Lee had two singles, a triple and drove in a run for the Cougars while Katelyn Wilson had three singles and an RBI, Zoe Johnston two singles and an RBI and Loraine Magnus a double and an  RBI.

Abby King was the winning pitcher on a two-hitter with no walks and three strikeouts. The Cougars are now 7-9 on the season.

Altamont blanked Neoga in seven innings. The Indians tallied a run in the first and two in the second then had a six-run fourth and a run in the sixth.

Altamont banged out 12 hits led by Duckwitz with a single, double and two RBI, Shryock with a single, triple and an RBI and McHugh with a triple and an RBI. The Indians are now 9-16 on the season.

Biggs pitched six innings, allowing four hits, four walks and striking out eight.

Neoga was led by Tiffany Roderick who had three singles.

Kadi Borries pitched a no-hitter for the Wooden Shoes as T-town blanked Shelbyville 7-0. Borries went the distance, didn't allow a walk and struck out 14.

Borries also had a single, double and drove in three runs. Danielle Repking had two singles and an RBI.

The Wooden Shoes are now 22-1 on the season.

Liberty Dunaway and Jenna McMechan combined to throw a no-hitter as Cumberland beat Tri-County 15-0 in five innings.

The Pirates stepped out to a 6-0 first inning lead then added a single run in the second, three in the third and finished out with five in the fourth.

Dunaway went three innings allowing no hits and striking out three. McMechan pitched three innings, allowing three walks and striking out four.

Sadie Oakley had a single, double and an RBI for the winners while Kyle Thornton had a double and a home run with five RBI.

The Pirates improve to 13-10.

Newton edged Paris 3-2 in action Monday.

The Eagles trailed Paris 1-0 until the third when they tied the score. Paris moved ahead in the fifth with a run but Newton came back with a two-run sixth.

Hardiek picked up the pitching win on a three-hitter with two walks and five strikeouts.

Frohning had a single, double and an RBI while Ochs had a single, home run and two RBI. Coffman finished with two singles, a double and an RBI.
