Hearts, Bulldogs Nab Big Softball Wins

It was a run-scoring blitz during softball competition Wednesday. Effingham High School won by 10 runs while Effingham St. Anthony won by 18 runs.

Effingham 10, Windsor/Stew-Stras 0

The Hearts edged out to a 2-0 lead over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg. EHS didn't score in the second but did over the next four innings to end the game in the sixth via the 10-run rule, 10-0.

Aly Armstrong moved her pitching record to 6-1 by throwing a three-hitter with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

Alissa Kersey led the way offensively for the Hearts with a single, home run and three RBI while Skylar Schafer had two doubles and two RBI, Hope Collier three singles and two RBI and Jenna Wright a single, double and two RBI. Carsyn Fearday chipped in with two singles and an RBI.

Carson Cole, Megan Schlechte and Becca Schlechte had a single each for WSS.

The Hearts are now 8-2 on the season and will host Mattoon Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.

St. Anthony 19, Decatur St. Teresa 1

To say St. Anthony had a big inning would be putting it mildly. The Bulldogs rushed out to an 18-0 first inning lead and tacked on a single run in the second. The game ended in the third inning as St. Teresa put up a single run.

The Bulldogs banged out 12 hits in the contest. Marci Mills, Jenna Woltman and Hunter Niebrugge had two singles and three RBI each. Katie Kabbes added two singles and two RBI. Shea Kinkelaar chipped in with a double and an RBI.

Alli Day was the winning pitcher on a two-hitter with two walks and four strikeouts.

At Neoga

This game was close for three innings before Oblong started building on its 3-0 lead with two in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth to end the game 12-0 over Neoga.

Oblong had seven hits in the contest and was aided by five Neoga errors. Oblong improves to 7-1 on the season.

Vaughn had the lone hit for Neoga with a single. Baylee Sparks pitched the win allowing no walks and striking out eight. The Indians drop to 1-6 on the season.

Cumberland's Sadie Oakley hit a home run and drove in three runs as the Pirates claimed a 7-4 win over Villa Grove/Heritage.

Villa Grove held a 4-0 lead in the top of the third before the Pirates started inching their way into the lead with two runs in the third and two in the fourth.

The Pirates had 10 hits in the contest led by Oakley with a single, home run and three RBI and Jenna McMechan with two singles and an RBI.

Flora blanked South Central 14-0 in five innings Wednesday behind the no-hit pitching of Kelsey Krutsinger. Krutsinger finished striking out six.

The Wolves opened up a 6-0 lead in the second inning then had a three-run third and a five-run fourth.
