At Newton

The Teutopolis eighth-grade softball team fell to Newton 1-0.

"The game was a tough match," said T-town Coach Brittany Meyer. "The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Newton was able to get its lead runner on and bunt her over to put a girl in scoring position.  In the bottom of the sixth, there were no outs and runners on second and third.

"All Brumleve, our pitcher, had a great day and was tough all day.  With two runners in scoring position, Alli then struck Newton's three hitter out on a huge pitch.  Next play, the four hitter comes to the plate and there are still two runners in scoring position, Alli throws an outstanding rise ball, which causes a ground ball back her. The runner at third goes home and Karsyn Mette blocks the plate, and the runner is out at the plate.  With two outs there are still two runners on. The next batter, Allison Harris, hits a hard ground ball through the right side for the only run of the game.

"Both pitchers were extremely tough. Ali only allowed four hits on the day and pitched an outstanding game.  Newton has been undefeated until a loss to Charleston 8-3 on Monday night, and our game could have gone either way at any time. We had only five hits at the cutting, with Claire Bushur going 2-for-3.  Olivia Niemerg, went 1-for-2 with a lead off walk in the top of the seventh to get us a runner to score.  Karen Mette followed with a strike out, but Olivia Niemerg was able to steal second in order to get in scoring position.  Emma Ruholl put down an outstanding bunt to move Olivia to third.  Ciera Roepke was up to bat in the top of the seventh with two outs and what an at bat.

"Ciera fought off 15 pitches.  She fought and was fouling off anything she could.  She worked herself into a full count and kept swinging, although ending in a swinging strikeout that she fouled into the catcher's glove.  Tough loss for the day but excellent performance from both teams."
