EHS Drops AC Doubleheader To Mt. Zion, Area Softball Roundup

MOUNT ZION -- Effingham dropped an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader to Mount Zion Thursday.

The Hearts fell in the opener 5-3 despite outhitting the Braves 12-6. EHS took a 2-0 first inning lead and led 3-2 after three. Mount Zion tied in the fourth then scored two runs in the fifth. The Braves had two home runs, a two-run shot by Allie Davis and a solo homer by Alex Davis.

Kaylee Tonn led the Hearts with a single, two doubles and an RBI while Madison Weis added a single and double and Jenna Wright a single, double and two RBI.

In the second contest, Effingham's bats went silent as Mount Zion scored a 13-0 win in five innings via the 10-run rule.

Morgan Wilson and Brittany Beals had the lone hits for the Hearts with a single each. EHS drops to 2-4 in the conference, 5-4 overall. The Hearts will host Nokomis today at 4:30 p.m.

At Strasburg

Effingham St. Anthony was set to play a National Trail Conference contest at Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor but Stew-Stras/Windsor forfeited the contest.

 

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis stepped out to a 4-0 first inning lead on Neoga and went on to end the game in the fifth inning, 12-2.

Kadi Borries had quite a game with three doubles, a triple and four RBI. She also came on to pitch two innings, allowing no hits, no walks and five strikeouts.

Madison Cowman picked up the pitching win on a no-hitter with no walks and four strikeouts. She pitched two innings before being relieved by Borries who went two innings. Anni Borries pitched the final inning allowing one hit, two runs, one walk and striking out one.

A. Borries had two singles while Drees had two singles and an RBI.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown split victories Thursday. The Eagles hosted Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick and edged the visitors 4-3 then played a makeup game against Vandalia and fell to the Vandals 19-10.

In the first contest, BCCH took a 2-0 lead but SEB tied in the fourth and took a 4-2 lead in the fifth. BCCH scored a final run in the sixth.

"This was a fun game to watch and to coach," said SEB Coach Tom Fedrigon. "We played really good defense when we needed to and got some timely hits on offense. Pitcher Baylee Scholes spun a four-hitter."

"We just didn't get the key hits," said BCCH Coach Carolyn Wendte, whose team dropped to 0-6 in the National Trail Conference, 1-9 overall.

In the second game, Vandalia handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 19-10 loss. The two squads combined for 24 hits in the game.

SEB held an 8-5 lead after two innings. Vandalia then came back to tie the score in the fourth then have an eight-run sixth inning.

St. Elmo/Brownstown had 10 hits but committed nine errors in the contest.

"It is difficult to commit nine errors and expect to stay in a game," said Fedrigon. "We played so well the first game that this one was definitely a letdown."

Audriana Pruett had a double and two RBI for SEB while Stephanie Calhoun had two singles and three RBI and Kyrstyn Fitch two singles.

Newton claimed a 7-2 Little Illini Conference win over Lawrenceville Thursday.

The Eagles led 2-1 after three innings then tacked on two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Richards had a double, triple and drove in three runs to lead the Eagles.

Newton improves to 2-2 in the conference, 9-5 overall and will host a round robin tournament today.
